How did Mr. Wonderful earn his money and wealth?
Terence Thomas Kevin O’Leary is a businessman and television personality. He is most commonly known for his company, SoftKey Software Products and also for being a judge on the reality show “Shark Tank”. He took up the nickname “Mr. Wonderful” as an indication of his reputation for having a mean attitude and being of help to misguided entrepreneurs. His first business venture came in the form of an independent television production company called Special Event Television (SET), which he co-founded with two of his MBA classmates.
After leaving the SET, O’Leary started Softkey in the basement of his house in 1986. The Softkey products were developed when the competition in the field was very tough. But it managed to stand its ground and was ultimately acquired by Mattel in 1999 for US$4.2 billion. In 2003, O’Leary invested in StorageNow Holdings, which is the operator of storage services in Canada, with facilities in 11 cities. O’Leary co-founded O’Leary Funds Inc. which was a mutual fund company in 2008 and rose in value from $400 million in 2011 to $1.2-billion in 2012. The company had its interests in global yield investing. His brother Shane O’Leary is the director of the firm while O’Leary maintains his position as chairman and lead investor
His other ventures include O’Leary Mortgages, O’Leary books, O’Leary Fine Wines, and gold investment. O’Leary then founded a capital investment company called O’Leary Ventures, that was a private early-stage venture by him. O’Leary has also published books which describe his experience and opinions on business, finance, money, and life. His first book was published in 2011 and was titled “Cold Hard Truth: On Business, Money & Life”. O’Leary came out with the sequel to the book in 2012 and was called “The Cold Hard Truth on Men, Women, and Money: 50 Common Money Mistakes and How to Fix Them”.
O’Leary became one of the five venture capitalists on the Canadian installment of the show “Dragon’s Den”. He also joined the American show “Shark Tank” in 2009, where he continued his blunt and abrasive investor persona. The show Shark Tank became a huge success and won three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Structured Reality Program. He became involved in politics when on January 2016, he declared he would invest $1 million in the economy of Alberta given that Premier Rachel Notley would resign. O’Leary lends his support to the construction of a pipeline that stretches from Athabasca oil sands to Eastern Canada. He has been open about his disapproval of Canada relying on Saudi Arabia for oil and gas.
He also worked as a co-host of the Discovery Channel’s show “Discovery Project Earth” in 2008. He also produced hosted his own reality show, Redemption Inc, which helps ex-convicts in establishing their own businesses.
