Disney’s ‘Mulan’ follows the story of a young girl who defies tradition and proves herself a trailblazer when it comes to the role of women in the world. When her country is threatened by powerful forces, the Emperor issues a decree asking one man per family to join the army. Mulan’s father is old and has no son, which means he would have to do the part on behalf of his family. To prevent him from walking into certain death and to bring honor to her family, Mulan disguises herself as a man to join the Imperial Army. The film is an adventurous ride that leaves you wanting for more. Will we get the second chapter of Mulan’s story?
Mulan 2 Release Date
‘Mulan’ was released by Disney on September 4, 2020. The film opened to favorable reviews from the critics and was praised for its visuals and adding more depth to the story. The film ends on a point where the path for Mulan seems to open endless possibilities for her. This feeds the fire for the need of a sequel and to find out what happens next for Mulan.
As of now, Disney has made no official announcements regarding the status of the sequel. However, rumors have already started to circulate about the sequel being in works. This makes sense with the timeline, considering that the movie was originally supposed to be released in March 2020. ‘Mulan’ had been one of the most anticipated releases for Disney, and the way its recent live-action makeover of popular stories has found success, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Mouse House had already concocted plans to expand the story of Mulan beyond one movie.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the release date of ‘Mulan’ was pushed repeatedly, until it was finally released in September. This puts a five-month span between its original and eventual release date, which would have given enough time to the filmmakers to start working on its sequel. However, nothing concrete about it has been announced, and due to the sheer scale of the project, we expect the filmmakers to take their time to assess where they want to take Mulan’s story from here. Considering all these factors, we expect ‘Mulan 2’ to release sometime in 2023 or later.
Mulan 2 Cast: Who can be in it?
The cast of ‘Mulan’ is led by Liu Yifei. Donnie Yen plays the role of Commander Tung, and Yoson An appears as Chen Honghui. Jet Li plays the role of The Emperor while Jason Scott Lee appears as Bori Khan. Tzi Ma and Rosalind Chao appear in the roles of Mulan’s parents. For the sequel, we expect all the main cast members to return, though Bori Khan might not come back, considering that he is defeated in the first part. The nature of the cast also depends on what route the story takes.
Mulan 2 Plot: What can it be about?
‘Mulan’ ends with the eponymous heroine returning home, after having accomplished her mission of saving the country and bringing honor to her family. Her act of sneaking out of the house to join the army in the guise of a man is forgiven by her family, and her father acknowledges his misguided pride. She also rejects the Emperor’s invitation to join the Royal Guard, but the commander tracks her down and offers her a new sword, with the hope that she reconsiders her decision.
In ‘Mulan 2’, we expect her to decide what she really wants. If she does join the guard, what would her next adventure entail? There is also the question of all the things that appear in the original movie but not in the live-action remake. The animated version of ‘Mulan 2’ didn’t get much praise, so the live-action remake will not take the same route. Still, there are a lot of fantastic things about The Ballad of Hua Mulan that can be adapted for the screen.
