Over the years, the Indian film industry has seen a lot of gradual changes. Gone are the days when only a Khan movie would find wide acceptance at the global box office. Multiple regional industries of India are pushing through the hegemony of Bollywood and are representing India with more authenticity and freshness.
When it comes to the changing taste of Indian movies in international markets, the ‘Baahubali‘ series comes to the forefront. The series has been the brainchild of Telugu maestro S. S. Rajamouli, a South Indian director. The movies in the series have been simultaneously shot in Tamil and Telugu and have been dubbed in English, Malayalam, and Hindi to reach a wider pool of audience. In a way, it has been a true global sensation from India in the last few years. The popularity of the series is huge in India and the global market too sat up and took notice.
The two films in the franchise have collectively netted more than 350 million dollars globally so far. The second one proved to be much bigger than the first one with both of them earning critical accolades for their grandeur and well-knit plots. Both ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ (2015) and ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’ boast 87% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes as well. Ever since the last film, talks have been rife about the next chapter of the Baahubali saga. Everyone’s eager about the next installment of the franchise. And we are here to talk about everything we have known so far about ‘Baahubali 3’. But before we can speculate and come to conclusions about the upcoming movie, we need to discuss the events that panned out in the first two movies. This will help us in reaching a greater understanding of the plot of the third one.
What Has Happened in Baahubali so Far?
‘Baahubali‘ tells us about the mythical kingdom of Mahishmati. The first movie, ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ starts with a montage of a woman falling in a waterfall carrying a baby but holds out the baby before dying. The baby is then rescued by a village couple. Later in life, he turns into a fine young man with curiosities. One day, young Shivudu ventures over the waterfall to observe the world and comes across a warrior named Avanthika. From her, he gets to know about the political tensions in Mahishmati and the rebellious group’s attempt to overthrow the power. Shivudu agrees to help her and the group in rescuing the former Queen Devsena from the torturous confinement. In doing so, he comes across Kattappa who recognizes Shivudu and tells him about secrets that change the very foundation of his identity and that of the kingdom.
Shivudu’s real name is Mahendra Baahubali who is actually the son of the late king Amarendra Baahubali. Katappa then goes on describing the past to Mahendra Baahubali. He tells him about the origin of his father, his crooked uncle Bijjaladeva and his wife and the ruler of Mahishmati, Sivagami. Amarendra and Bhallaladeva, the son of Sivagami and Bijjaladeva, were raised together as royal children. But Amarendra’s jovial and kind nature stood in contrast to Bhallaladeva’s cruelty. At last, Amarendra was chosen as the new king and when asked about his father’s whereabouts, Kattappa tells Mahendra that he’s the one who killed him. The first movie ends on a tenterhook as this earth-shattering revelation and the phrase ‘Why Kattappa killed Baahubali?’ had become a catchphrase after its release. The first movie established the kingdom of Mahishmati and its dark secrets and the second one built upon it.
The second movie aptly titled ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’ (2018), continued with Kattappa’s narration of the past. The movie mostly deals in flashbacks as Amarendra Baahubali’s story is told. Kattappa tells Mahendra that his father, after being given the kingdom, roamed around the country to know more about people. He meets Devasena, the strong princess of neighboring Kuntala. Amarendra swiftly falls in love with her and upon seeing her portrait, Bhallaladeva becomes jealous of Amarendra. He influences her mother who without the knowledge of Amarendra’s amorous affections, demands to bring her to the kingdom as a punishment for rejecting Bhallaladeva. Once everyone comes together in Mahishmati, misunderstandings are cleared out and Amarendra chooses Devasena over the kingship.
Bhallaladeva’s father Bijjaladeva hatches a crooked plan to tarnish Amarendra’s popularity and finally kill him. Influenced by the false impressions that Amarendra wants to kill Bhallaladeva, Sivagami orders Kattappa to kill Amarendra and he follows his queen’s orders. And with that, the critical question is answered; yet, the story continues. Kattappa learns about the conspiracy and exposes them to Sivagami. She pronounces Amarendra’s infant son Mahendra as the new king as she attempts to escape with the baby. She is killed by her son near the waterfall and Devasena is captured and tortured for years. The events after this are explicit in the first movie. Mahendra after learning everything swears to kill Bhallaladeva and free his mother. With the help of Kattappa, Avanthika and the group, he leads a climactic battle against the kingdom and finally avenges his father.
Baahubali 3 Plot: What Can It Be About?
‘Baahubali 3’ is expected to follow the events of the previous two films. The far-reaching consequences of the battles and conspiracies can find a new dimension in the new movie. S. S. Rajamouli has created such a vast world with such complexity that the story can be developed for the third one in many ways. For instance, the 25 years reign of Bhallaladeva can be an interesting prospect. We don’t have many details about how he led his troops and administered the Mahishmati kingdom in those years and the effects of his cruel reign over the common people. But a more compelling possibility is that of the future.
‘Baahubali 3’ can well be ‘Baahubali: The Restoration’. After the devastating end in ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’, Mahendra will look to revive the lost glory of Mahishmati and its subjects. The restoration of the Kuntala kingdom under the guidance of Devasena will be heartwarming to watch. So will be the depiction of the relationship of Mahendra and Avanthika. On the darker side, there will be war again. The sword merchant in the previous movie promised his help to Kattappa in wars, which forebodes the imminent danger.
Moreover, Bijjaladeva is alive. The mastermind behind many colossal events in Mahishmati will surely look forward to avenging his son’s death. He may have allies in the form of Kalakeyas and other kingdoms. The post-credit scene of ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’ also philosophically hints at a new king altogether. So the next film can also explore new horizons.
Baahubali 3 Cast: Who Will be in it?
If the story follows the original events, then Prabhas should return as Mahendra Baahubali. Tamannaah and Anushka Shetty should also return to play Avanthika and Devsena respectively. Sathyaraj will return as Kattappa and Nassar is also expected to return as Bijjaladeva. Apart from the main cast, the movie should also include new characters and a few familiar minor characters. However, everything is not confirmed yet.
Baahubali 3 Release Date: When Will it Premiere?
Director S. S. Rajamouli so far hasn’t given any concrete details about his willingness to continue with the saga. Actor Prabhas recently said that he will be more than happy to be part of future films. Going by Rajamouli, if he gets a compelling enough script with nicely fleshed out characters like the previous two movies, then we may see a ‘Baahubali 3’ hitting the screen sooner than later. Films in the Baahubali saga are literally huge and have high production values.
Keeping everything in mind, even if we do get to see Bahubali 3, it won’t be anytime before 2022 or 2023. The way the first two movies have opened up grand possibilities for Indian cinema, we hope Rajamouli would take his own sweet time to make the upcoming movie surpass the previous two.
