Everything We Know About The Nice Guys Sequel

Buddy cop comedies have always had massive potential. The camaraderie between the two cops coupled with the hilarity that ensues is unparalleled. Shane Black, though isn’t a household name in the gamut of talented directors, is a forerunner in the genre of buddy cop comedies. The director completely understands the genre better than anyone else, and ‘The Nice Guys’ is a prime example of that.

Directed by Shane Black and co-written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Black, ‘The Nice Guys’ is a neo-noir dark comedy which is set in 1977 Los Angeles and follows a private detective Holland March who joins forces with a tough enforcer Jackson Healy to investigate the disappearance of a teenage girl, Amelia Kuttner. In the endeavour, the two uncover many dark governmental secrets which raise the stakes of the case all the more.

The film stars the enigmatic Russell Crowe as the enforcer and the dexterous Ryan Gosling as the callous yet compassionate Holland March. Angourie Rice stars as Holly March, Matt Bomer as the perilous John Boy, Margaret Qualley as the rebellious Amelia Kuttner and Kim Basinger as the conniving corrupted Judith Kuttner. Produced by Silver Pictures and Waypoint Entertainment Bloom, ‘The Nice Guys’ premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was further taken up by Warner Bros. Pictures for a theatrical release.

The black comedy neo-noir was produced on a budget of $50 million and grossed an underwhelming $62.8 million. Though it wasn’t the commercial success it deserved to be, ‘The Nice Guys’ received several positive reviews. Black’s direction and screenplay were praised immensely with critics commenting on his cerebral understanding of the genre of black comedy. In addition, the performances of Crowe, Gosling and the young Rice were appreciated for the nuance and the hilarity. The film was compared positively to the year’s other buddy comedies such as ‘Ride Along 2’, ‘Dirty Grandpa’ and ‘Zoolander 2’. In addition, the production design which reproduced the 70s was commented upon positively.

Though the film was not a commercial success, Shane Black has continuously said that he could direct ‘The Nice Guys’ sequel till eternity. In 2017, the television network Fox stated that they wanted to produce a series led by a female cast. Silver Pictures is also producing a spin-off titled ‘The Nice Girls’ which still hasn’t started yet. Here is everything we know about the yet untitled sequel to ‘The Nice Guys’.

The Nice Guys 2 Plot: What is it about?

The first film left viewers with a lot of imagination as to how would the sequel follow up on the climax. Even though Healy and March managed to uncover the truth which led to the corrupted Judith Kuttner being put behind the bars, it was evident that she wanted to get back at them. In addition, as the film ended, the two agreed to join forces for the good and work to solve crimes.

The narrative of the sequel can follow up on Kuttner’s comeback as the antagonist to take revenge against the duo. ‘The Nice Guys’ did not have a distinct villain. Her character has humongous potential as the cartoonish-ly evil and corrupted villain. If the writers can use Kuttner as a more active participant in the narrative – such as her endeavour in ruining the lives of the detective and the enforcer – it could be a wave change in the narrative of the sequel.

Another aspect the writers can indulge in are the character arcs, especially that of Jackson Healy. Healy mainly functioned as a sarcastic enforcer. We know that he has had a bad marriage but now, it would be interesting to see his possible relationships in his future or his relationship with his ex-wife.

The Nice Guys 2 Cast: Who is in it?

Academy Award-winning Russell Crowe last worked on the critically acclaimed Joel Edgerton’s ‘Boy Erased’ where he essays Marshall Eamons, a father who tries to change his son’s sexual preference. As of 2019, the actor is also busy with Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel’s biographical drama ‘True History of the Kelly Gang’ which is in its post-production. He is also busy with Showtime Network’s drama series ‘The Loudest Voice’ which is set to premiere in late June of 2019. Ryan Gosling has not signed any project since the criminally underrated ‘First Man’ where he essayed the role of Neil Armstrong.

Angourie Rice has been working quite a lot since ‘The Nice Guys’. In 2018, the 17-year-old actress starred in the romantic fantasy drama ‘Every Day’ and the comedy-drama ‘Ladies in Black’. The actress is starring in another sequel, titled ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ which is set to release in July of 2019. Other than that, she has not signed any new film or television show. Kim Basinger too has not signed any new film since starring in the commercial success ‘Fifty Shades Freed’ (2018). Other than these set of actors, actors Matt Bomer, Margaret Qualley and Yaya DaCosta would certainly not reprise their roles because their characters are essentially dead.

The Nice Guys 2 Crew: Who is behind it?

Shane Black, who made his debut with the neo-noir black comedy ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ (2005), last directed the commercially successful but negatively received ‘The Predator’ (2018). As of 2019, the director is coming up with two films, titled ‘The Destroyer’ and ‘Doc Savage’, which he is writing and directing,

John Ottman, who works in both the departments of editing and composing, has not signed any new films that are set to release in the foreseeable future. Emmy nominated British composer David Buckley has recently worked on Ric Roman Waugh’s action film ‘Angel Has Fallen’ which is set to release in August of 2019. French cinematographer Philippe Rousselot recently worked on David Yates’ ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’ (2018) but has not worked or signed anything new since then.

The Nice Guys 2 Release Date: When will it premiere?

‘The Nice Guys’ released in May 2016, which might not have been the best decision. Though the film is immensely funny and is a nifty neo-noir, the plethora of superhero and franchise films that were released at the time, buried the flick. The month of May is full of “summer” releases and a buddy-cop comedy film would certainly not do well. However, with film gaining a cult following, the sequel might do well anytime of the year. The bigger question is when will be the sequel greenlit? Even if it gets commissioned now, it might take at least a couple of years of production and marketing time. So, optimistically, we are looking at 2021 release date for ‘The Nice Guys’ sequel. We will update this section as soon as we receive any official update on ‘The Nice Guys 2’.
