BBC Three and Hulu’s latest offering ‘Normal People’ is a teenage romance series that revolves around the complicated lives of two socially divergent high-schoolers as they enter into a forbidden relationship that extends to their university years. The coming-of-age series is based on Sally Rooney’s eponymous best-selling novel. A BAFTA and Oscar nominee Lenny Abrahamson (‘Room’) and International Jury Award winner Hettie Macdonald (‘Beautiful Thing’) serve as the directors of the series.

Normal People Season 1 Release Date

‘Normal People’ season 1 is all set to premiere in its entirety on April 29, 2020, at 3:00 am ET on Hulu. It consists of twelve episodes with a runtime of 25-30 minutes each.

Ahead of its U.S. premiere, the show dropped on BBC iPlayer on April 26, 2020, followed by a BBC One release on April 27, 2020.

Normal People Cast: Who is in it?

The series features Daisy Edgar-Jones as Marianne Sheridan, the calm and composed girl from an affluent family. She is best known for her performance in ‘Silent Witness’ and ‘War of the Worlds.’ Theater artist Paul Mescal makes his TV debut as Connell Waldron, a popular and athletic high schooler. Eliot Salt essays the character of Joanna. ‘Penny Dreadful’ fame Sarah Greene appears as Connell’s mother, Lorraine. ‘Outlander’ actor Aislín McGuckin stars as Marianne’s mother, Denise.

The other cast members include Frank Blake as Alan Sheridan, India Mullen as Peggy, Fionn O’Shea as Jamie, Desmond Eastwood as Niall, Leah McNamara as Rachel, Aoife Hinds as Helen, Sebastian de Souza as Gareth, Eanna Hardwicke as Rob, Clinton Liberty as Kiernan, and Kwaku Fortune as Philip, among many others.

Normal People Plot: What is it About?

The on-screen adaptation of Rooney’s millennial-centric novel focuses on the lives of two individuals, Connell and Marianne, who are in the final year of their high-school in Carricklea, County Sligo, a quaint town located in northwestern Ireland. Connell is fair-minded, smart, and well-liked by his peers, while a self-assured Marianne is a loner, who doesn’t have many friends. Marianne’s family belongs to the upper echelons of the town while Connell’s mother Lorraine, works as Marianne’s housekeeper.

After barely noticing each other in school, their paths intersect once again when Connell lands at Marianne’s doorstep to pick up his mother and take her home. Soon Connell and Marianne engage in flirting, which paves the way for a steamy romance between the two. Marianne wants to keep their relationship a secret for the sake of her conservative family, who looks down upon Connell and refers to him as a “rooker.” As days go by, Marianne becomes obsessed with their relationship and begins to display a masochistic and lascivious pattern, which goes deeper than temptation. When they leave the town in pursuit of higher education, Connell and Marianne’s secret rendezvous comes to an end.

That is, until they run into each other again at Trinity College in Dublin. Their lifestyles at the University showcases a complete contrast side of their complicated relationship as the filthy-rich Marianne now enjoys a higher social standing and parties with a swarm of friends. At the same time, Connell is often found alone on the side-lines. Will the two ever forego come out in the open and acknowledge their relationship? Or will this be the end of their forbidden tale of romance?
