One Day at a Time Season 5: Everything We Know

One Day at a Time Season 4 Episode 4 Episode 3

‘One Day at a Time’ is an Emmy-winning, critically acclaimed sitcom, which is based on Norman Lear’s 1975–1984 eponymous comedy series. The show had originally premiered on Netflix, following which it opened to immense praise — especially because of its script and performances. However, strangely, the streamer canceled the series after three seasons. But as luck could have it, ‘One Day at a Time’ was eventually picked up by Pop TV, which aired its fourth outing in March 2020. Now, the next question is: with this transition from a streamer to a linear network, will we get the fifth edition from the sitcom? Let’s get started.

One Day at a Time Season 5 Release Date:

‘One Day at a Time’ season 4 premiered on March 24, 2020, on Pop TV. After airing six episodes, the season came to an unexpected halt due to the production shutdowns, enforced by the COVID-19 pandemic. The fourth outing finally wrapped up with an animated election special that dropped on June 16, 2020. Later, season 4 aired from October 12, 2020, to October 26, 2020, on CBS.

Now, as far as a fifth season goes, the creative team behind the show has always been ready. EP Gloria Calderon Kellett even stated in an interview with Deadline that they have a framework in place – not only for season 5 but also for season 6. She said: “We always come in with a skeleton of what we’re thinking we’re going to do, and we sort of had that built out through season 5 or 6, and there are so many things we haven’t gotten to tell yet because this family, we have so much for them to go through still.”

However, the decision to go ahead with another season will depend a lot on the ratings. If the numbers are at par with the expectations of Pop and the series is renewed soon enough, we can expect ‘One Day at a Time’ season 5 to premiere sometime in 2021.

One Day at a Time Season 5 Cast: Who Can be in it?

Season 5 is expected to see the entire lead cast making a comeback. This includes Justina Machado as Penelope Alvarez, a former United States Army Nurse. Penelope is a mother to two kids, Alex (Marcel Ruiz) and Elena (Isabella Gomez). We also have Todd Grinnell as Pat Schneider — the wealthy landlord of Penelope’s building. Rounding up the lead cast is Stephen Tobolowsky as Dr. Leslie Berkowitz (Penelope’s lonely boss) and Rita Moreno as Lydia (Penelope’s mother).

One Day at a Time Season 5 Plot: What Can it be About?

Season 5 will continue to chronicle the multiple quests of the Alvarez family — a Cuban-American clan living in LA. The future episodes will narrate other tales that explore familiar topics like mental issues, immigration, sexism, homophobia, gender identity, and racism – faced by the Latinx community in the US. As outlined by EP Gloria Calderon Kellett, season 5 has plans to include many beautiful episodes. One of the episodes might deal with religion while another might follow Elena as she tries to figure out where she will go to school. Penelope’s love life might also be addressed, now that she is with Max.
