‘Outlander’ is a brilliant period drama peppered with the element of time travel. Based on the eponymous book series by author Diana Gabaldon, the series has enjoyed a significantly loyal viewer base since its premiere in 2014. Developed for TV by Ronald D. Moore, the show follows the books chronologically and focuses on Claire Randall, a former World War 2 nurse who suddenly finds herself in 1743 amidst the Jacobite rising.
Praised for its gorgeous set designs, intriguing storytelling, era-appropriate costumes, and powerful performances, the show has received glowing reviews from fans and critics worldwide and also enjoyed a long and successful five-season run. Since the conclusion of season 5 in May 2020, fans have been waiting with bated breath to know when their favorite show will return. Well, the wait ends now as we come bearing answers!
Outlander Season 6 Release Date
Fans would be delighted to know that STARZ has confirmed that ‘Outlander’ season 6 will premiere sometime in early 2022. It will likely follow the weekly release schedule it has always maintained. Moreover, the sixth season will consist of 8 episodes instead of the originally planned 12 episodes, each with an average runtime of 53–90 minutes. The premiere episode is revealed to be 90-minute long.
Owing to its massive popularity and high ratings, STARZ officially greenlit season 5 and season 6 on May 9, 2018. In March 2020, all speculations were put to rest when we got official confirmation about season 6 entering production from the show’s lead Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser). However, production was severely affected and even halted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Ultimately, in February 2021, the cast and crew were able to resume filming amidst strict safety protocols. Thankfully, the cast and crew remained dedicated throughout and were able to wrap up filming by the first week of June 2021.
That’s a wrap on S6 of @Outlander_STARZ! THANK YOU to our hard working crew, cast, writers & anyone else I missed. It’s always a team effort on this show & I couldn’t be more proud of our amazing group this season. Looking forward to showing everyone the fruits of our labor

Unfortunately, Executive Producer Matthew B. Roberts also revealed how challenging it was to shoot the season during the pandemic and explained that they had to rethink many of their intimate scenes and use digital people instead of actual extras. As the pandemic left a lasting impact on production, the makers decided to curtail the sixth season by four episodes, thus making it an 8-episode season. However, the good news for fans is that the creators will compensate for the shortened run of season 6 with an extended 16-episode season 7 of the show, which was renewed in March 2021.
Outlander Season 6 Cast: Who is in it?
The main cast members are sure to return in season 3, with Caitriona Balfe reprising her role as Claire Fraser alongside Sam Heughan’s Jamie Fraser. The returning cast can include John Bell as Ian Fraser Murray, Lauren Lyle as Marsali MacKimmie Fraser, Graham McTavish as William MacKenzie, Maria Doyle Kennedy as Jocasta MacKenzie Cameron, Richard Rankin as Roger Wakefield, Sophie Skelton as Brianna Randall, and César Domboy as Fergus Fraser.
It is also likely that Brennan Martin will step back into the shoes of Wendigo Donner in the sixth season. Moreover, the introduction of the Christie family will witness the addition of quite a few talents to the cast. Confirmed among the new castings include Mark Lewis-Jones (‘Chernobyl’) as the leader of the Protestants, Tom Christie, Alexander Vlahos (Versailles) as his son, Allan Christie, and Jessica Reynolds as his daughter, Malva Christie.
In May 2020, David Berry confirmed that he would not be reprising his role as Lord John Grey in season 6. However, in June 2021, to the surprise of all the fans, David Berry appeared as his character in a video shared by the network to commemorate World Outlander Day, thus, confirming his return as the beloved character in season 6. Additionally, Duncan Lacroix’s Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser and Ned Dennehy’s Lionel Brown won’t make a return as the characters seem to have met a tragic fate in season 5.
Outlander Season 6 Plot: What is it About?
A standout scene towards the end of season 5 is the heinous rape of Claire Fraser. Lionel and his accomplices take sadistic pleasure in tormenting Claire until Jamie Fraser and a few clan members come to her rescue. A short yet brutal battle follows in which Lionel loses his life. Meanwhile, the finale also shows Wendigo Donner finding the gemstone that will help him return to the future, thus hinting at the existence of more time travelers.
‘Outlander’ season 6 bases itself on ‘A Breath of Snow and Ashes,’ the sixth book in Diana Gabaldon’s eponymous novel series, and will pick up immediately where season 5 ends. In season 6, political unrest will almost be knocking on the Frasers’ door as they try their best to live an isolated life. The season is also sure to touch on Claire’s trauma from the sexual assault and torture and how it affects her life.
Moreover, with Donner finally getting his hands on the time-traveling gemstone, his character will have a pivotal role to play in season 6. It has been confirmed that ‘Outlander’ season 6 will deal with the tempestuous years leading up to the American Revolution. At the same time, Jamie will walk a tightrope trying to balance his life in America and his oath to the crown. Moreover, the arrival of the Christie Family will also be a critical point in the season.
In an interview with ELLE magazine, Matthew B. Roberts gave a hint at what is to come in season 6. He said, “Each character will be dealing with something from their past and it will help us tell stories going forward.” Thus, it looks like the period piece is all set to expand the world through branching storylines and will deliver on the thrill, suspense, and charm that has made ‘Outlander’ popular since its conception.
