Ozark Season 3: Premiere Date, Cast, Recap, Update

‘Ozark’ is an American crime drama web series that airs on Netflix. It first premiered on July 21, 2017. The series, which includes elements of a gripping thriller, has been created by Bill Dubuque, who is best known for works like ‘The Accountant‘, and Mark Williams. Media Rights Capital, Aggregate Films, Zero Gravity Management, Headhunter Films, and Man, Woman & Child Productions are the companies backing the project, while Jason Bateman, Chris Mundy, Bill Dubuque, and Mark Williams serve as the executive producers.

The show is gritty crime drama which follows financial planner Marty Byrde, who suddenly relocates the family from Chicago suburb of Naperville to a summer resort community in the Ozarks after a money laundering scheme goes wrong, and he is required to pay off a debt to a Mexican drug lord. Upon their arrival in the Ozarks, they become entangled with local criminals as well.

The show has received a steady fan base, and though it is somewhat underrated, it captures the entire vibe of a family man turned criminal quite as well as ‘Breaking Bad’ does, which is high praise. Critics have lauded the show for the complexity of the plot and the strongly delivered performances while recognizing that the show has immense potential.

Ozark Cast: Who is in it?

The cast of ‘Ozark’ is led by Jason Bateman as Marty Byrde, a financial advisor, who works as a money launderer for the second largest cartel in Mexico. However, when his partner is caught embezzling money from the cartel, they face their wrath, and to get away with his life, Byrde relocates his entire family to the Ozarks, promising to pay off his debts to the cartel. Laura Linney, who has appeared in films like ‘Primal Fear‘ and ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose‘, plays the role of Wendy Byrde, Marty’s estranged wife, who ultimately becomes his lobbyist for a casino in the Ozarks, through which the family plans to launder the money. Sofia Hublitz and Skylar Gaertner play the roles of Charlotte and Jonah Byrde, the children.

Julia Garner plays the role of Ruth Langmore, a smart 19-year-old, who figures out Mary’s plan. Unfortunately for Marty, she belongs to a local family of troublemakers. Peter Mullan and Lisa Emery play the roles of Jacob and Darlene Snell, the local crime bosses who pester Marty into entering into a partnership with them.

In the upcoming season, we know that Wendy’s brother will be added to the show. He has had some mental illness in the past and will surely add a hint of additional trouble. Apart from that, the main cast members will return, but there will be a shift in the power dynamic, as Wendy enters the spotlight of the illegal operations as much as Marty, and it remains to be seen if their big plans materialize.

Ozark Plot: What is it about?

Ozark’ revolves around the Byrde family, as they are forced to relocate to the Ozarks and pay off a debt they owe to the Mexican cartel. Marty tries to do this by acting as an angel investor and funneling the money through sinking businesses. At the same time, he has to try and keep his family together. His children do not take to the change very well, and he is on rough terms with his wife, after having discovered that she was cheating on him. However, the cartel soon becomes one of Marty’s many problems, as he gets entrenched with the local criminal elements. This includes the Langmore family, a bunch of troublemakers who are not afraid to get a little rough to get what they want. However, the more menacing threat is the Snells, who are the local drug dealers and do not take kindly to the cartel trying to move in on their turf in any manner. On top of all this, the FBI is on Marty’s trail.

The entire show is a gripping drama about a man who uses his brains to fend for his family and begins on the fringes of a life of crime, only to find himself getting more and more caught up in it. There is an excellent sequence where Marty explains money laundering, and it is reminiscent of Saul Goodman doing the same on ‘Breaking Bad‘, a show to which ‘Ozark’ has inevitably been compared. While it does not come close yet, there are some complex plots that have been unpacked, and the performances are solid. Overall, the show has good potential to be great.

However, the problem that this series suffers from is that it inevitably turns back on itself. The show is bound to remain stuck in the Ozarks forever if we are to see the Byrde family any more. There is a hint of preexisting tragedy to the show. If they do manage to pay off the debts then the show is over, and they can go away from the Ozarks. However, the place and the narrative structure is designed to trap them. Over the seasons, we have seen Marty dig himself in deeper into the community, to the extent of starting an affair there. Moreover, the criminal elements in Marty’s life keep increasing, from troublemakers to local drug lords, to the Mexican cartel, and even the Italian mob. It appears to be like quicksand, the more he struggles to get out of it, the more it draws him in.

From what Bateman has teased, season 3 will be a lot more about Wendy than Marty. Not only was Wendy a vocal lobbyist for the casino, which would help to launder money, but she has begun to relish this aspect of Marty’s life. It will be interesting to see if there is an actual paradigm shift in power as she takes the reigns of Marty’s operation. Moreover, with the FBI agent on Marty’s trail being shot dead, the Feds are expected to rain down the full wrath and fury of law enforcement on the town, making it much more difficult to conduct criminal activities. The crimes of Marty might come back to haunt him as well, especially, the murder of the priest, but for now, they look like they have a shot at getting out, with their casino finally ready.
