‘Penny Dreadful’ is a critically acclaimed horror series that stars Eva Green and Josh Harnett. Set against the classic backdrop of 19th Century London, it entwines several elements from Gothic fiction. Showcasing a masterful depiction of iconic horror characters, the show is widely praised for its excellent cast, which also includes Billie Piper and Timothy Dalton.
Season 3, which released in May 2016, holds impressive scores — 83/100 on Metacritic and 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critical consensus stating: “Penny Dreadful is back for a beautifully bloody third season of ever-expanding mysteries and Gothic horrors.” Critics have also described it as “Season 3’s American-set storyline breaks things up nicely with some classic western elements mixed in with the show’s established creature horrors, and the aesthetics of the production have never looked better.”
The third season does a wonderful job of wrapping up many of the show’s primary storylines. Sir Malcolm and the team reach Dracula’s lair with an intention to rescue Vanessa. They are attacked by several of Dracula’s “children” while Ethan slips away and sets off to find Vanessa. She requests him to shoot her to end the darkness, which Ethan eventually agrees to. Sir Malcolm, Victor, and Ethan decide how they should proceed with their futures, the Creature takes his son’s corpse to the river, and we see Vanessa’s funeral as the ending scene.
Although the story seems to have concluded in season 3, fans still wish to see more of the show’s multiple characters, including Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, and Dorian Gray, among others. So, will the series return? Will there be a ‘Penny Dreadful’ season 4? Let’s find out.
Penny Dreadful Season 4 Release Date: Cancelled or Renewed?
‘Penny Dreadful’ season 3 premiered on May 1, 2016, on Showtime. After airing for nine episodes, it concluded on June 19, 2016.
With a rich storyline and an impressive cast, the series did have the potential to go on for a long time. But sadly, that does not seem to be the case. In fact, when fans flocked in to catch the season 3 finale, they realized to their dismay that the show had come to a sudden end.
After season 3 ended, Showtime released a clip in June 2016 on its official Twitter handle where creator John Logan confirms that the series has indeed come to an end. Check it out below:

Logan had planned during the airtime of season 2 itself that the third season would be the show’s last installment. Although there were several unfinished arcs like Ethan’s past and Dracula’s future, Logan was of the opinion that it was futile to continue the tale further without Vanessa. Fans thought that since the show is packed with supernatural elements, Vanessa could be brought back to life. But Logan wanted her to finally have peace.
So, yes, ‘Penny Dreadful’ season 4 stands officially cancelled. But on a brighter note, it has been confirmed that the series would continue in the form of a spinoff: ‘Penny Dreadful: City Of Angels’. It is a kind of a spiritual sequel that does not pick up from the original show’s finale but is set in 1938 Los Angeles. Production had already started in August 2019. Well, we still have something to look forward to then!
