Where to Stream Pokemon Detective Pikachu?

The world of Pokemon has been a fascinating universe filled with mysterious and powerful creatures that have captured our imaginations ever since Satoshi Tajiri created the franchise. ‘Pokemon Detective Pikachu‘ is Hollywood’s take on the popular franchise, and carries it in an entirely different direction. However, to be fair, the movie is not just based on the franchise, but also on ‘Detective Pikachu’ the 2016 video game.

‘Pokemon Detective Pikachu’ has the distinction of being the first live-action Pokemon film and has garnered praise for the design of all the Pokemon in the movie. While the story itself might have received some criticisms for being too standard, you know that you want to watch this urban fantasy and mystery movie, just to see how the Pokemon interact with the humans. After all, that is the stuff we all grew up on, not to mention the Pokemon battles. Well, ‘Detective Pokemon Pikachu’ does not disappoint in either of these, but before we tell you where to watch the movie, let us quickly take you through the plot of ‘Detective Pokemon Pikachu’.

What is Detective Pokemon Pikachu About?

‘Detective Pokemon Pikachu’ has its story set in the Pokemon universe and we understand that Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) is the protagonist of our story. He is a 21-year-old car salesman who has given up on his dreams of being a Pokemon trainer, due to the death of his mother and the fact that his father, Harry (Ryan Reynolds), has gone missing. Tim travels to Ryme City, which is a metropolis for humans and Pokemon to live together as equals, where his father worked as a detective in the police force. Tim’s intention is just to collect his father’s assets after his apparent death in a car crash.

However, at Harry’s apartment, Tim encounters a Pikachu in a Sherlock Holmes hat (deerstalker). It turns out this Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) can speak, and Tim can understand him. However, neither have long to reflect on this, as they are attacked by a group of Aipom (monkey-like Pokemon), who seems to be influenced by the R labeled purple gas that Tim accidentally released.

Once they escape, Pikachu introduces himself as a detective and Harry’s partner and says they were investigating a case together, when Harry suddenly disappeared. They get in touch with a fluff column writer, Lucy, who has her own suspicions about Harry’s apparent death. This leads them deeper into the mystery than they had imagined. They uncover an illegal Pokemon fighting ring, where we are witness to a grand duel that is about to take place between Pikachu and Charizard. However, Charizard is given some of that purple gas and Pikachu has to be saved by Tim. When Sebastian, the organizer of these fights, accidentally released all of the gas and causes havoc, the duo manages to escape but not before knowing that someone called ‘the doctor’ supplies this gas to Sebastian.

The mystery only gets stranger, as Tim and Pikachu confront the police lieutenant Hideo Yoshida (Ken Watanabe) about Harry’s death, and are subsequently taken to meet the city’s benefactor, Howard Clifford (Bill Nighy). Clifford points towards an escaped Mewtwo as being the cause of all these problems, and also Harry’s car crash. As the mystery seems to be headed into darker territory, the duo is joined by Lucy and her Psyduck. Things get a little dangerous hereon, as they discover that the doctor was someone Harry was working with. However, they are attacked by several Greyninja, soon after. It turns out that a Greyninja might have also been responsible for what happened to Harry. This realization comes a little too late as Pikachu already blames himself for releasing Mewtwo from the experimentation lab, and thus feels that he caused Harry’s death.

In the depths of despair, our group of detectives finally understand the grand plan that is at play. It seems as though Howard is behind all of it and the son he shifted suspicion on, is actually a Ditto. Howard’s plan is to use the R gas to fuse himself with Mewtwo and then fuse all the people with the Pokemon. He also starts this plan, but Pikachu boldly steps up.

We witness another epic battle as Pikachu uses his powers of electricity to separate Howard from Mewtwo, and the Pokemon sets about putting things right. Tim gets back his father, Harry as well, and though he has the opportunity to return to his normal life, once he gets a taste for the adventure, there is no going back, and he decides to stay on to learn more about being a detective.

With a sequel already in the works, we are bound to see more of these adventures, but for now, let us tell you where to watch ‘Pokemon Detective Pikachu’.
