Preacher Season 4: Premiere Date, Cast, Recap, Update

‘Preacher’ is an American supernatural television series that airs on AMC. Developed by Sam Catlin, Evan Goldberg, and the hilarious Seth Rogen, the show is based on the Preacher comic book series created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon and published by DC Comics under its Vertigo imprint.

On November 16, 2013, AMC announced that it was developing a television series based on the DC Comics series Preacher. A few months later, on February 6, 2014, AMC ordered a pilot script, which was written by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen and had Sam Catlin as the showrunner (it should be noted here that Catlin was the writer of the legendary AMC show ‘Breaking Bad’). At the end of the year, AMC ordered that pilot the be filmed, and another year later, on September 9, 2015, AMC picked the show up for a full season.

Subsequently, on May 22, 2016, Season 1 of ‘Preacher’, consisting of 10 episodes, premiered, and it received great praise from television critics and viewers alike. Unsurprisingly, on June 29, 2016, AMC renewed the show for a 13-episode Season 2, which premiered a year later on June 25, 2017. Season 2 received even more critical acclaim from Season 1, prompting AMC to renew the show again for 10-episode third season. Season 3 then premiered on June 24, 2018, and soon became the most critically acclaimed season of the show.

With fans and critics all clamoring for another season, AMC again renewed the show for a fourth season, which is slated to air in 2019. While that’s great news for fans of the show, the bad news is that AMC has also confirmed that Season 4 will be the last season of ‘Preacher’. Here’s everything you need to know about its next season.

Preacher Cast: Who is in it?

Being a comic book adaptation, ‘Preacher’ has quite a long list of cast members, both main and recurring.

In the show, Dominic Cooper plays the role of the protagonist Jesse Custer, a small-town preacher with a criminal record. However, Custer’s life is upended when he discovers that he has superpowers and can make anyone do as he wishes. Ruth Negga, meanwhile, plays Jesse’s volatile girlfriend, Tulip O’Hara. Joining Jesse and Tulip in their rather unusual quest is a vice-loving Irish vampire called Cassidy, who is played by Joseph Gilgun. Lucy Griffiths plays Emily Woodrow, Jesse’s right-hand (wo)man.

Additionally, list of main cast members also include W. Earl Brown as local lawman Sheriff Hugo Root, Derek Wilson as Odin Quincannon’s right-hand man Donnie Schenck, Ian Colletti as Sheriff Root’s son Eugene “Arseface” Root, Tom Brooke and Anatol Yusef as two Adephi angels Fiore and DeBlanc, Graham McTavish as the supernatural, unstoppable killing machine. The Saint of Killers, Pip Torrens as Grail member Herr Starr, Noah Taylor as Adolf Hitler (really), who is imprisoned in Hell. Further, Julie Ann Emery and Malcolm Barrett play Grail operatives Lara Featherstone and Hoover respectively, Betty Buckley plays Jesse’s grandmother Marie “Gran’ma” L’Angelle. Colin Cunningham plays Marie’s henchman T.C., and Tyson Ritter plays Jesus Christ’s last descendant Humperdoo / The Messiah.

Apart from the aforementioned main cast members, the show also has dozens of recurring cast members, including Jackie Earle Haley as business magnate Odin Quincannon, Ricky Mabe as Mayor Miles Person, Jamie Anne Allman as Betsy Schenck, Nathan Darrow as Jesse’s father John Custer, and Mark Harelik as himself / God, to name a few.

We expect most of the aforementioned cast members to make a comeback and reprise their roles in Season 4, except for the ones who have departed owing to the end of their story arcs. As far as new additions to the cast in Season 4 are concerned, we are not aware of any additions at the moment. If and when news surfaces about new additions to the cast, we will be sure to update this section.

Preacher Plot: What is it about?

Like the comic series, the show is based in a small Texas town called Annville, and follows the protagonist Jesse Custer, a chain-smoking preacher with a criminal history and drinking problems. While Jesse returns to his hometown of Annville and takes over his deceased father’s church in fulfillment of his promise, his left gets upended when he is possessed by Genesis, an extremely powerful creature born out of the unnatural coupling of an angel and demon. The possession leaves Jesse with a power that allows him to command the obedience of all those who hear his words. Armed with this power, and aided by his ex-girlfriend Tulip and a vampire called Cassidy, Jesse goes on a journey across the US to find God, who left Heaven at the moment of Genesis’ birth.

As the show progresses, Jesse’s hometown Annville is left completely destroyed, and the trio of Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy travel to New Orleans, the last known whereabouts of God, who happens to a big fan of jazz. In New Orleans, however, the trio find themselves in trouble, and they have to dodge gangsters and secret agents, before their fateful confrontation with an extremely powerful genocidal being, The Saint of Killers. Following their run-in with The Saint of Killers, the trio travel to Louisiana next, to a plantation called Angelville where Jesse was raised as a child. Having avoided his past for most of his life, Jesse is forced to confront it in Angelville, and he has to escape it as the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

The third season of the show, which follows the adventures of Jesse and co. in Angelville, ended with an explosive finale that saw Hitler taking charge of Hell and the Devil embarking on a quest of revenge against The Saint of Killers. Understandably, the upcoming, final season of ‘Preacher’ is slated to be one which we won’t forget anytime soon.

In terms of reception, ‘Preacher’ has been an immense hit among television critics, and the show enjoys a brilliant score of 90% on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers, too, have loved the show, and it boasts a solid overall rating of 8.1/10 on IMDb, based on over 55,000 votes.

Preacher Season 4 Release Date: When is it coming?

While fans were rejoicing about the show’s return, their joy was partially cut short when Seth Rogen, on April 8, 2019, announced that Season 4 would be the final season of the critically acclaimed comic book adaptation.
