When Will Prodigal Son Return to FOX?

Prodigal Son Season 2

‘Prodigal Son’ is a crime drama that follows Malcolm Bright, an FBI profiler who now showcases his extraordinary talent at the NYPD, after being kicked out from the FBI. He is forced to face his serial killer father, Martin Whitly, and prevent himself from given into his serial killer genes after a murderous psychopath possesses the same killing traits as Whitly. The show received mixed reviews from the critics.

However, its dark and unsettling narrative managed to accumulate a decent fanbase, which has pointed out its striking similarity to the 1991 classic ‘Silence of the Lambs.’ Naturally, fans must be wondering: when will ‘Prodigal Son’ season 2 release? Let’s find out.

Prodigal Son Season 2 Release Date

‘Prodigal Son’ season 1 premiered on September 23, 2019, on FOX and concluded its run on April 27, 2020, after airing 20 hour-long episodes. The show was initially supposed to have a 22 episodes-run, but production had to be halted because of the global COVID-19 pandemic, limiting the episode count to 20.

Although Season 1 received average response from the critics, the probability of the show’s return for a second season seems high as it has achieved a steady rating throughout its run and ranked among the top-rated shows of the network. Also, the climactic conclusion of season 1 establishes a need for another season. The above-mentioned points might work in favor of the show’s renewal. Whenever FOX green-lights it, we expect ‘Prodigal Son’ to premiere sometime in 2021, on FOX.

Prodigal Son Season 2 Cast: Who is in it?

In season 2, ‘The Walking Dead’ fame Tom Payne might reprise his role as Malcolm Bright (earlier Malcolm Whitly), an NYPD consultant with impeccable profiling skills and a dark past. ‘Good Omens’ star Michael Sheen might return to essay the character of Dr. Martin Whitly, Malcolm’s father, who also happens to be an incarcerated serial killer. Lou Diamond Phillips might reappear as Malcolm’s mentor and NYPD Lieutenant Gil Arroyo.

The returning cast members can also include Halston Sage as Ainsley Whitly, Aurora Perrineau as Det. Dani Powell, Frank Harts as Det. JT Tarmel, Keiko Agena as Dr. Edrisa Tanaka, Bellamy Young as Jessica Whitly, among others. Molly Griggs and Matthew Lawler might not return to portray Eve Blanchard and Eddie, respectively.

Prodigal Son Season 2 Plot: What can it be About?

In season 1, apart from profiling murderers and psychopaths, Malcolm is grappling with anxiety and childhood trauma, inflicted upon him by his father, Dr. Martin Whitly AKA ‘The Surgeon,’ a serial killer who is locked in an asylum after brutally killing 23 innocents. When a notorious killer displays the same pattern as his father, Malcolm visits him to ask for his help in solving the case.

One thing leads to another, and Malcolm finds himself battling with his inner demons to prevent his serial-killer genes from getting activated. Towards the end, Malcolm is arrested for committing the grotesque murder of Eddie, the guy who was sent to kill Malcolm’s father. Malcolm finds a shred of chilling evidence that puts an end to the girl in the box mystery, and also decides his fate. Nicholas Endicott’s ulterior motives come to light, and the Whitlys pull out all stops to take him down.

Season 2 might focus on the aftermath of the final showdown in the season 1 finale. Malcolm might come to terms with the tragedies in her life and put his focus on making his future better and brighter by working hard at the NYPD, and not letting his trauma dictate him any longer. Jessica and Gil might take their relationship to the next level, after confessing their feelings for each other.
