Created by M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller, ‘Queen of the South’ is a crime drama series that revolves around an impoverished woman who goes on to set up a drug empire. The show is an adaptation of Telemundo’s telenovela ‘La Reina del Sur,’ which, itself, has been adapted from Spanish author Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s eponymous 2002 novel. Since the show’s premiere on June 23, 2016, it has enjoyed considerable critical and commercial success. With the fourth season ending over a year ago, many of you must be wondering about the release date and other details of ‘Queen of the South’ season 5! Here is what we know about it.

Queen of the South Season 5 Release Date

‘Queen of the South’ season 4 premiered on June 6, 2019, and ran for 13 episodes before coming to an end on August 29, 2019, on USA Network. Shortly before the season 4 finale, USA Network renewed ‘Queen of the South’ for season 5. Principal photography began on March 2, 2020, but because of the COVID situation, the production was canceled for three weeks on March 14, 2020.

“We’re taking a three week break for the safety of our cast and crew on #queenofthesouth Can’t wait to get back and finish up the amazing season we have cooked up for you. Be safe! Take care of yourselves. And don’t hoard toilet paper,” showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez wrote in an Instagram post. It was later extended indefinitely. Considering all this, we can expect ‘Queen of the South’ season 5 to release sometime in 2021, on USA Network.

Queen of the South Season 5 Cast: Who Is in It?

Alice Braga leads the cast as Teresa Mendoza, the protagonist of the series. ‘Queen of the South’ also stars Justina Machado as Brenda Parra, Peter Gadiot as James Valdez, Hemky Madera as Pote Galvez, Jon-Michael Ecker asg Raymundo “El Güero” Davila, Alfonso Herrera as Javier Jimenez, David Andrews as Judge Cecil Lafayette, Cory Hart as Randall Green, Derek Evans as Davis Lafayette, Julian Silva as Tony Parra, Ryan O’Nan as King George, Sofia Lama as Emilia, and Alimi Ballard as Marcel Dumas.

Most of the main cast members are set to return in ‘Queen of the South’ season 5. Gadiot, who sporadically appears in season 4, is slated to rejoin as a member of the main cast in season 5. Silva, Evans, Hart, Lama, and Herrera might not be returning in season 5, as the fourth season seals the fate of their characters.

Queen of the South Season 5 Plot: What Is It about?

‘Queen of the South’ tells the story of Teresa Mendoza, a woman who rose from abject poverty to become one of the most powerful drug cartel leaders. In the season 4 finale, King George finds out that Marcel and his men were behind Birdie’s death. Javier discovers that Randall is responsible for Emilia’s death. Randall tries to kill Teresa but realizes that it’s a trap and manages to escape. Cecil Lafayette’s son, Davis, dies. Cecil orders Randall to kill Javier by pouring gasoline over him and lighting him on fire, but Javier grabs Randall, and they both die. James returns and warns Teresa by saying, “They’re coming for you.”

The first episode of season 5 is titled ‘Fantasmas’ (Ghosts). In season 4, we have seen Teresa lose some of her most trusted lieutenants. We can expect the deaths to be addressed in season 5. With James’ return, his and Teresa’s romance might bloom again. Eddie Brucks and Teresa’s relationship might end in the following season. Season 5 might also depict the Russian mob as Teresa’s main rivals.
