When Will Ratched Return to Netflix?

Netflix’s most anticipated series of the summer, the mystery-drama ‘Ratched’, was originally a speculative screenplay written by Evan Romansky, who was a film student at the time. After the script found its way to Ryan Murphy (‘Glee’, ‘American Horror Story’), he added his characteristic flair for melodrama and pulp to create a fun, engaging, and Hitchcockian over-indulgence that will keep you entertained and captivated throughout its nearly 8-hour-long runtime. Set in 1947, the show chronicles the early life of the diabolical head nurse Mildred Ratched from the 1975 Oscar-winning film ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’. If you are already done with the first season and wondering whether there will be another one, this article is for you.

Ratched Season 2 Release Date: When Will It Premiere?

‘Ratched’ season 1 premiered on September 18, 2020, on Netflix. It has 8 hour-long episodes. Even in the first reports that came out about the series, it was confirmed that the show is going to have another season. Netflix’s initial order for the production of the show was for two seasons, reportedly comprised of 9 episodes each. But seeing how season 1 has only 8 episodes, it is unclear whether season 2 will have 10 episodes, or it will have 8 episodes and the extra 2 episodes will be added to a prospective season 3.

After Romansky finished the script and Murphy became associated with it, the two reached out to the Saul Zaentz estate and Michael Douglas for the rights to the Nurse Ratched character, as they still had the screen rights to the Miloš Forman magnum opus. Both Douglas and Zaentz’s estate subsequently joined the production team. There was also a heated bidding war between Netflix, Hulu, and Apple from which Netflix emerged as the eventual winner.

As with every other TV series these days, the COVID situation might prove to be disruptive for any future production of ‘Ratched’. Having said that, ‘Ratched’ season 2 is likely to release at some point in late 2021.

‘Ratched’ Season 2 Cast: Who Is in It?

Longtime Ryan Murphy collaborator, Sarah Paulson (’12 Years a Slave’, ‘American Horror Story’) leads the cast as the titular character, Nurse Mildred Ratched. The cast is also comprised of Judy Davis as Head Nurse Betsy Bucket, Sharon Stone as heiress Lenore Osgood, Cynthis Nixon as the press secretary to the governor Gwendolyn Briggs, Finn Wittrock as psychopathic murder Edmund Tolleson, Jon Jon Briones as Dr. Richard Hanover, Alice Englert as Nurse Dolly, Corey Stoll as P.I. turned assassin Charles Wainwright, Brandon Flynn as Lenore’s psychotic son Henry, Vincent D’Onofrio as Governor George Milburn, Charlie Carver as Attendant Huck Finnigan, Sophie Okonedo as Dissociative Identity Disorder Patient Charlotte Wells, Amanda Plummer as motel owner Louise, and Rosanna Arquette as Annie.

Paulson, Nixon, Davis, Wittrock, D’Onofrio, Okonedo, and Plummer might return in ‘Ratched’ season 2. Arquette might make a few guest appearances in the next season, as she does in season 1. The characters that Stone, Briones, Englert, Stoll, Flynn, and Carver portrayed were killed in the course of the first season. They will not probably come back in season 2.

Ratched Season 2 Plot: What Is It about?

In the penultimate episode, Bucket, with the help of Ratched, removes Hanover and takes his place as the director of Lucia State Hospital. Hanover subsequently goes on the run with Charlotte, who has an episode while they are staying at a motel and kills him. Ratched brings his head to Osgood and gets paid. She then visits Briggs, and they have an argument before confessing their love for each other.

Osgood’s happiness doesn’t last long as her son gets one of their domestic help to kill her. He later finds out that his mother has left most of her wealth to her pet monkey and instructions to institutionalize him. In the season finale, governor Milburn wants to put Edmund on the electric chair and is not swayed by requests from Ratched and Briggs. Ratched subsequently decides to kill Edmund herself with a lethal injection. But before she does that, Charlotte arrives acting as Hanover and breaks Edmund out. The series ends in 1950, with Ratched, Briggs, and Bucket vacationing in Mexico when they discover that Edmund has started killing nurses.

In the following season, expect the story to focus on the dynamics between Edmund, Charlotte and all her personalities, and the latest addition to their team, Louise. Edmund and Ratched are not finished with each other. They will meet again, and their story will continue. Season 2 might also devote some time to Bucket’s administrative skills. Ratched and Briggs’ relationship might also receive a considerable focus, as it has in season 1.
