‘Ronny Chieng: International Student’ is an Australian comedy television series that airs on ABC in Australia and on Comedy Central in the US, among others. Created and written by comedian and ‘The Daily Show’ correspondent Ronny Chieng and Declan Fay, the show follows the adventures and misadventures of Ronny Chieng himself when he was an international student in Melbourne, Australia.
A relatively new show, the pilot of ‘Ronny Chieng: International Student’ aired as a part of ABC’ 2016 anthology series, ‘Comedy Showroom’, and it was so successful that ABC greenlit it for a full season. Subsequently, Season 1 of ‘Ronny Chieng: International Student’, consisting of six episodes, premiered on ABC on June 7, 2017. It was praised by television critics and viewers, and little over a year later, on August 13, 2018, the show made its way to the Comedy Central app for viewers in the US, making it ABC’s first-ever production for Comedy Central. Now, fans of the show are wondering whether the comedy series will return for a second season. Here’s everything we know about it thus far.
Ronny Chieng: International Student Cast: Who is in it?
In the show, Ronny Chieng stars as himself. For those unaware, Ronny Chieng is a man who has had tremendous international exposure – born in Malaysia to a Malaysian-Chinese family, Ronny was raised partly in New Hampshire in the US, and in Singapore. After completing his schooling, Ronny went on get Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws degrees from the University of Melbourne. As it stands, Ronny is a senior correspondent with ‘The Daily Show’ on Comedy Central.
Joining Ronny as part of the main cast are Molly Daniels as Asher Angus, Hoa Xuande as Elvin, Shuang Hu as Wei-Jun, Keith Brockett as Joderick, Patch May as Craig Cooper, Anthony Morgan as Professor Declan Dale, Laurence Boxhall as Daniel, Linda Schragger as Mrs. Chieng, and Dave Eastgate as Mick Rosenberg.
Apart from the main cast members, the show also has several supporting cast members, including Adrienne Pickering as Karen Ford, Quin Ellery as Nicholas, Brenton Cosier as James, Daniel Di Giovanni as Alexander, and Felicity Ward as a post-grad student. Further, the show has also seen guest appearances from several people, including Louise Siversen as Joy-Anne, Paul Denny as Gerard, Tim Potter as the librarian, Gareth Yuen as Denedict, and Ryder Jack as Hipster.
If the show does return for a second season, we would expect most of the main cast members to make a comeback and reprise their roles.
Ronny Chieng: International Student Plot: What is it about?
‘Ronny Chieng: International Student’ is a show that revolves around Ronny’s experience as an international student in Melbourne. While a lot of it is based on Ronny’s real-life experiences while studying in Melbourne, the rest of it is a fictionalized account of what he went through.
It is a hilarious show that tracks Ronny as he makes his way through university. While his university life is initially a quiet one, it all changes with the arrival of an American exchange student, who transforms Ronny’s dorm into a 24-hour center for frat parties. On one hand, Ronnie has to deal with his mother, who calls him all the time and/or stalks him on social media to make sure he isn’t drinking, doing drugs, or having unprotected sex. On the other hand, Ronny also has to deal with studies, language problems, and myriad other problems one faces while studying abroad. As Ronny gets used to university life, he also falls for his friend Asher, and goes to many lengths to try and win her affection. Overall, the show focuses on how he deals with the trials and tribulations of being an international student at a foreign university.
It should be mentioned here that the show does make use of a lot of stereotypes about Asians, but it does so in a way that is not cringeworthy or disrespectful. In fact, the show is a rather sweet one, and downright hilarious at most times.
It was thus not surprising when ‘Ronny Chieng: International Student’ opened to rave reviews in Australia. In other places too, the show got positive reviews from television critics. For instance, The Guardian wrote, “Yes, Ronny Chieng: International Student is base at times and nicely rude. But it’s also smart. Weirdly sweet, too. Hey, maybe you don’t always need to be nasty and squirmy to be funny. And this is hilarious.” However, the show does not have a score on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, so we don’t know what television critics collectively think about it. That being said, we’re fairly sure that most television critics will have enjoyed the show. Of course, being a quality show about university life, ‘Ronny Chieng: International Student’ has also made quite an impression on young viewers, and it has a good rating of 7.5/10 on IMDb.
Ronny Chieng: International Student Season 2 Release Date: When is it coming out?
Although Season 1 of ‘Ronny Chieng: International Student’ saw its finale air on July 12, 2017, there has been no word of a second season since then. Considering the fact that ABC has made no announcement about a second season yet, it could be possible that the network has no intention of renewing the show.
However, considering the positive critic reviews the show has received, there’s also a chance that the network could renew the show. Nothing can be said as of now, until ABC makes an official announcement. Our best guess is that if the show does get renewed, Ronny Chieng: International Student can release sometime in 2020.
