Created by Laurie Nunn, ‘Sex Education,’ first released on January 11, 2019. The British comedy series revolves around Otis, a teenage boy whose mother is a sex therapist. Usually on the sidelines, Otis is pushed into the limelight when his classmate Maeve collaborates with him to set up an underground sex advice business at their school.
The critically acclaimed teen drama has garnered appreciation for the mature manner in which it deals with subjects such as sex, identity, and relationships. The uber-talented cast portrays the interesting characters with the much-needed nuance and sensitivity; the critics were all praise for the portrayal of Eric’s character in particular. In addition, the comedy-drama proved to be a commercial success for Netflix, with just the freshman run drawing more than 40 million viewers. Naturally, you must be eager to know if the third season is on the cards. Buckle up because we have a lot to share with you!
Sex Education Season 3 Release Date
‘Sex Education’ season 3 is set to release on September 17, 2021, at 3 am ET on Netflix.
On February 10, 2020, Netflix announced that the show would be returning for its third edition. The upcoming cycle will have eight episodes, in keeping with the episode count of seasons 1 and 2. Much like most of the TV shows, the production was delayed due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus. Fortunately, the cast and crew were able to commence filming the third season in early September 2020.

In November 2020, Collider asked Gillian Anderson (Jean Milburn) whether the show will continue beyond the three cycles. She responded, “It has been discussed, and I think, given how much people are enjoying it, I don’t see why it wouldn’t, but things change.” She ended her response by emphasizing that Netflix has the final say. However, the series creator Laurie Nunn seemed to have a different take on the matter. In an interview in January 2020, she said teen shows should end before the characters become old enough to go to university. Either way, only time will tell what is in store for this coming-of-age drama.
Sex Education Season 3 Cast: Who is in it?
It looks like the cast lineup remains more or less intact as the following people have been confirmed to return in season 3: Asa Butterfield (Otis Milburn), Gillian Anderson (Dr. Jean Milburn), Ncuti Gatwa (Eric Effiong), Emma Mackey (Maeve Wiley), Kedar Williams-Stirling (Jackson Marchetti), Connor Swindells (Adam Groff), and Alistair Petrie (Michael Groff).
Among others who will appear in the upcoming edition are Mimi Keene (Ruby Matthews), Aimee Lou Wood (Aimee Gibbs), Chaneil Kular (Anwar), Simone Ashley (Olivia Hanan), Tanya Reynolds (Lily Iglehart), Patricia Allison (Ola Nyman), and Mikael Persbrandt (Jakob Nyman). We can also expect James Purefoy (Remi Milburn), Sami Outalbali (Rahim), Chinenye Ezeudu (Vivienne “Viv” Odusanya), George Robinson (Isaac), Conor Donovan (Quentin), and Samantha Spiro (Maureen Groff) to reprise their roles.
Furthermore, new actors have joined the fold. Dua Saleh will portray Cal, a non-binary student at Moordale Secondary School, who clashes with the new headmistress. Jemima Kirke will feature as Hope, the new headmistress of the school, whereas Jason Isaacs will play Mr. Groff’s older brother, Peter Groff. Additionally, Indra Ové has also been added to the mix to essay the role of Anna, the foster mother to Maeve’s half-sister.
Sex Education Season 3 Plot: What is it About?
In season 2, Jean starts a relationship with Ola’s father, Jakob, and Otis and Ola eventually break up. However, Otis is unable to wrap his head around the fact that Maeve has feelings for him and that his mother is dating Ola’s father. So, Otis ends up losing his virginity to Ruby. By the end of the season, Jean finds out about Otis’ sex advice business. In a shocking turn of events, she also learns that she is pregnant just when things aren’t looking great for her and Jakob. Back at school, Adam interrupts the musical production and publicly admits that he has feelings for Eric. In the final moments of the season, Otis leaves a voicemail for Maeve, saying that he is in love with her. But before Maeve can listen to the message, Isaac deletes it.
When the third season returns to our screens, there will be a time jump. We will meet a slightly sassier Otis who would be having casual sex. Adam and Eric will officially be a couple, and Jean would be pregnant with Jakob’s baby. Moordale would have undergone some significant changes under the leadership of Headmistress Hope, who will be determined to restore the school to its formal glory. We will continue to see Aimee learning and growing as she will gain more interest in feminism. The biggest plot point that season 3 will address is Otis’ voicemail in the season 2 finale that Maeve knows nothing about.
