‘Shadowhunters’, also known as ‘Shadowhunters: Mortal Instruments’, is a supernatural drama series based on Cassandra Clare’s ‘The Mortal Instruments’, a popular novel series. The premise revolves around a girl who finds out on her eighteenth birthday that not all is as it seems, and she actually comes from a long line of human and angel hybrids, whose job is to hunt down demons. Notably, the show is the second adaptation of the book series following the 2013 movie, ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’. Upon release, the series has mostly received positive responses from critics and has developed a strong fan following like most teenage dramas.

The leader of the group happens to be Valentine Morgenstern, Clary’s father, and Jocelyn’s ex-husband.
When her mother goes missing, Clary has no option but to turn to Luke, a person she trusts. However, Luke betrays her and soon the young girl finds herself caught up in a situation where she has to join a group of Shadowhunters. In the course of her adventures, Clary discovers powers that she never knew she had. She is thrown headfirst into the world of demon hunting. Along with her are Jace, an attractive, narcissistic and mysterious Shadowhunter, and Simon, her loyal and geeky friend. Her life becomes a far cry from her old situation soon, as she begins to live among fair folk, vampires, warlocks, and werewolves. Clary’s adventures become a sort of journey of self-discovery as she unearths more of her past, which also gives her an idea of what the future might hold in store.
‘Shadowhunters’ focuses on the fact that eighteen is an age for making crucial decisions. However, unlike most people, Clary’s decisions have to do with the battling forces of good versus evil. We get to learn that Clary’s mother had protected her from the truth of the world of Shadowhunters for as long as she could. However, when Clary witnesses their power firsthand and realizes her destiny, there is not much left to do but for her to be drawn into the world.
Overall, the show is shaped like most supernatural teenage dramas. The night is painted with an occult brush and the series is steeped in deep spirituality as a battle continues raging with supernatural creatures present. ‘Shadowhunters’ requires viewers to be well acquainted with its mythoi to enjoy what the series is trying to put forward. Naturally, viewers keep coming back since they grow to love the characters and want to spend more time around them as they embark on the supernatural adventures that can potentially save or destroy the world.
