Star Trek: Picard Episode 4 Recap:
Titled ‘Absolute Candor’, the episode sees Picard on planet Vashti, fourteen years prior to the current events. He beams down from his ship and happens to meet Elnor. Their relationship is a sweet one, with Picard giving the boy a copy of ‘The Three Musketeers’. However, Zani, Elnor’s caretaker, tells the boy that Picard dislikes kids because they often interfere with duty and pleasure.
Zani is not trying to be hurtful. It is just the Candor way, to speak one’s mind. Picard agrees with Zani but assures Elnor that he likes him. He also provides paternal affection to the boy, fencing with him by day, and reading to him during the night. This continues for a while until Picard receives news about an attack on Mars. Promising to be back, he goes away to tend to the urgent matter.
In the present, we see Picard is once again determined to go to Vashti because he wants to meet the Qowat Milat, and possibly convince one of them to join his side. When he beams down, he sees quite a different scenario, with Romulan adoration at an all-time high. He meets Zani, but Elnor, who is a fearsome warrior now, is not as thrilled. There is some residual resentment due to Picard’s abandonment, but when Picard is challenged to a fight by a former Romulan senator, Elnor steps in.
He declares that he has bound himself to Picard, as ‘qualankhkai’. The warrior then proceeds to dispatch of the former senator. Before the situation can get any worse, Picard and Elnor beam up to the ship, where the former admonishes the latter and sets down ground rules. Soon after, Picard’s ship comes under attack, but a friendly second ship saves them. This ship takes heavy damage, and as the doomed pilot is about to come on board Picard’s deck, the veteran prepares for an attack. However, it turns out to be Seven of Nine, who tells Picard he owes her a ship, before collapsing.
