How did Sugar Ray Leonard earn his money and wealth?
Ray Charles Leonard, an American professional boxer, also known as “Sugar” Ray Leonard was born on 17th May 1956 at Wilmington, North Carolina, the U.S. At the age of three, Leonard moved to Washington, D.C along with his family. The family settled in Palmer Park, Maryland when Leonard was ten. He went to Parkdale High School.
In 1969, Leonard started boxing at the Palmer Park. He then boxed in the National AAU Tournament’s featherweight quarterfinals in 1972. Also in the year, he boxed in Eastern Olympic Trials. The following year Leonard won the National Golden Gloves Lightweight Championship.1974 marked the year when Leonard won both National Golden Gloves and National AAU Light Welterweight Championships. Leonard succeeded in making it to the U.S Olympic Team as the Light welterweight representative in 1976. He also won the Olympic Gold Medal that year.
Apart from boxing, Leonard also performed as an actor. He appeared in various television shows, such as ‘Half&Half’, a sitcom that aired on UPN, ‘L.A. Heat’, ‘Renegade’, ‘Married… with Children’ and The horror anthology television series on HBO, ‘Tales from the Crypt’.
Leonard also appeared in movies like ‘I Spy’, a spy comedy film by Betty Thomas released in 2002. In 2010, he appeared in the biographical sports drama, ‘The Fighter’, by David O. Russel. Leonard was a competitor in the 12th season of Dancing with the Stars that premiered on ABC.
Leonard launched a boxing promotional company in 2001 namely Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Inc. in which he announced ESPN as the strategic partner. The company dissolved in 2004.
