The CW’s superhero action series ‘Supergirl’ showcases Kara Denvers AKA Supergirl’s adventures as the Kryptonian embraces her superpowers to protect the citizens of National City from local criminals and the dangerous super-villains who possess superhuman powers and abilities. Based on the eponymous DC character, the show has been developed for the screen by Ali Adler, Greg Berlanti, and Andrew Kreisberg.
It first premiered in October 2015, and since then, the show garnered universal acclaim for its well-adapted characters, engaging storyline, costumes, and surprisingly lighthearted tone than similar shows like ‘Gotham’ and ‘Arrow.’ Over five seasons, the show has earned several accolades and gathered a loyal fanbase. Now that season five has concluded, fans are wondering: When will ‘Supergirl’ season 6 release? Here’s everything we know.
Supergirl Season 6 Release Date
‘Supergirl’ season 6 premiered on October 6, 2019, on The CW and concluded its release on May 17, 2020. The season was initially planned to have 22 episodes, but it was cut short to just 19 episodes after the production was suspended because of the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. The makeshift finale, i.e., episode 19, had to be tweaked and re-written to give a satisfying ending to the season.
Owing to its popularity and steady ratings, the network recommissioned the show for a sixth season on January 7, 2020. Under normal circumstances, the show would’ve have been slated for a release in October 2020. However, it looks like fans will have to wait for quite some time for the show’s return, and there are two reasons for that.
Firstly, due to the current health crises, there is bound to be a delay in production. Secondly, in March 2020, the show’s lead, Melissa Benoist, announced that she is expecting a baby with Chris Wood. Therefore, there can be a significant shift in the release date of the sixth season. And since it has been skipped from the network’s January 2020 lineup, we expect ‘Supergirl’ season 6 to release sometime in 2021 on The CW.
Supergirl Season 6 Cast: Who is in it?
Melissa Benoist headlines the cast as Kara Danvers / Kara Zor-El / Supergirl. Chyler Leigh as Kara’s adoptive sister, Alex Danvers. Jeremy Jordan appears as Kara’s best friend, Winslow “Winn” Schott Jr. / Toyman. David Harewood steps into the role of the head of the DEO as J’onn J’onzz / Martian Manhunter. Mehcad Brooks essays the character of James Olsen / Guardian, a photojournalist at Daily Planet. Chris Wood plays the Daxam prince, Mon-El, while Katie McGrath appears as Lex Luthor’s half-sister, Lena Luthor.
The other cast members include Jon Cryer as Lex Luthor, Brenda Strong as Lillian Luthor, Nicole Maines as Nia Nal / Dreamer, Azie Tesfai as Kelly Olsen, Andrea Brooks as Eve Teschmacher, Julie Gonzalo as Andrea Rojas / Acrata, Staz Nair as William Dey, LaMonica Garrett as Mar Novu / Monitor, Odette Annable as Samantha Arias / Reign, and Sam Witwer as Benjamin Lockwood / Agent Liberty, among others. Except for a few, almost all the main cast members are expected to return for season 6. However, it has been confirmed that Mehcad Brooks won’t be returning to reprise his role as James Olsen in the sixth season since he has officially quit the show to focus on other projects.
Supergirl Season 6 Plot: What can it be About?
The fifth season follows Kara and her allies as they set out to defeat their adversaries Rama Khan and Gamemnae, the agents of a dangerous organization called Leviathon, whose main aim is to take control of the Earth, back from humans. Meanwhile, Kara also has to deal with Lex Luthor, a mastermind industrialist, and scientist. In the finale, Brainy puts his own life at stake to save Kara and the team. Lena pledges her loyalty to Kara, but that doesn’t affect Lex’s side as his mother, Lillian, joins him in his mission to wreak havoc in the lives of Kara and her friends. Lillian and Lex take the shrunken Rama Khan and his team and proceed to map out a plan to destroy Kara.
Season 6 might pick up from the ending of season 5. With the agents and members of the Leviathon in their possession, Lillian and Lex might work out a masterplan to take revenge from Brainy, Kara, and her team. Also, we can expect season 6 to reveal Brainy’s fate after bracing the incident in the spaceship. Does he survive the impact of the force-field or succumb to the injuries? Also, with Lena on Kara’s side, it will be interesting to see these two team up to take down Lillian, Lex, and other adversaries.
