Is Supernatural Season 16 Canceled?

The CW’s ‘Supernatural’ chronicles the multiple quests of the monster-hunting brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester. Spawning 15 seasons and 327 episodes, it has been one of the strongest rating-generators for the channel. The show starts off with the siblings searching for the yellow-eyed Demon that had murdered their mother — a plot arc that reaches its conclusion in season 2. Following this storyline, the series progresses to include other dimensions like Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, and everything in between. Diving into the concepts of Devil, God, and monsters, we have followed the Winchesters as they face death and are revived multiple times.

‘Supernatural’ has evolved over the seasons and in spite of its diversion from the original premise, the drama has continued to pull in viewers. Its 15th iteration, which wrapped up in November 2020, sees the Winchesters defeating Chuck, who is rendered mortal and powerless. Jack becomes the new God and decides to set the world back to its normal state. Now that the brothers have dealt with their biggest foe, fans might be wondering: where will the story head from here? Or, are there even any more tales left to tell? In short, will we see more of ‘Supernatural’? Let us find out.

Supernatural Season 16 Release Date: Renewed or Canceled?

‘Supernatural’ season 15 premiered on October 10, 2019, on The CW. After airing its 13th episode on March 23, 2020, the show went on a long hiatus — since production was forced to be halted, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The season returned with its 14th episode on October 8, 2020, and finally wrapped with its 20th episode on November 19, 2020.

In March 2019, stars Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Misha Collins confirmed that ‘Supernatural’ would end with its 15th season. The trio announced the news via a video on Ackles’ Instagram profile:

Executive producers Robert Singer and Andrew Dabb issued a joint statement, confirming the cancelation: “Firstly, we would like to thank all the people who have been involved with the show both in front of and behind the camera. For us, it has been an experience of a lifetime. The support we have had from both Warner Bros Television and The CW has been incredible. We’d like to give special thanks to Jensen, Jared, and Misha for making this journey so special. It is now most important to us to give these characters that we love the send-off they deserve” — Deadline.

So, yes, as of now, ‘Supernatural’ season 16 is officially canceled. Moreover, The CW’s president Mark Pedowitz had confirmed that the dark fantasy-drama is least likely to be developed into a franchise. Previous attempts at spin-offs have failed. But Ackles did hint that he is open to future discussions — if the creators ever decide to make another reincarnation of the series. However, until anything is official, we have to live with the fact that the Winchester brothers are not returning onscreen — anytime soon!
