January 20, 1993, marked a memorable day for the United States of America as people witnessed the transfer of federal executive branch power from George H. Bush to William Jefferson Blythe III. William is no other than Bill Clinton. Raised in Arkansas, not only did he get through the most challenging educational programs to ever exist, he succeeded in achieving his goals. From School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University to winning a Rhodes Scholarship to University College, Oxford, only to join Law school, Yale later in 1973. He earned a Juris Doctor (JD) degree in the same year. Clinton returned to his hometown to become a law professor and later was elected as the Governor of Arkansas from 1979 to 1992.
Even after these incredible achievements, Clinton had the desire to run for president of the United States, and a year later, Clinton won the 1992 presidential election against Republican George H. Bush by a difference of 202 electoral votes. His presidential term was from 1993 to 2001. He was impeached by the US House of Representatives on December 19, 1998, and was accused of having a relationship with the White House intern, Monica Lewinsky and this threatened his power.
Blair Foster directs the ingenious docu-series, The Clinton Affair, that follows the history of the events leading to Clinton’s impeachment. The Clinton Affair contains footage that was formerly confidential and never seen before by the public. This series focuses on the infamous start of an illicit affair, one that nearly toppled the president – also called the White House Scandal. The show that made its debut on A&E and unveiled all the secrets of the reckless president that almost cost him his presidency. In a report from Vanity Fair, Lewinsky says that she took part in the making of the documentary to “acknowledge” the past behaviour that she still regrets and feels ashamed of.
The Clinton Affair Cast: Who’s in it?
Since The Clinton Affair is a docu-series, it has the entire original cast, who are people who were present during the actual incidents. From Lewinsky to the journalist who published the original story, we have all of them explaining what actually happened and why it was all concealed from the eager audience.
Monica Lewinsky is seen talking about the various incidents from 1997 and how Clinton treated her differently and how she felt so privileged to be noticed by someone who himself is the one being noticed by the world 24/7. Ken Starr, the former Independent Counsel, is a part of the series as well.
Paula Jones, a former Arkansas state employee, who had sued Clinton for sexual harassment, gives an account of how he had treated her. David Shuster, the journalist of ABC, Little Rock, David Kendall, the attorney of Clinton, Lucian Goldberg, the conservative author and literary agent, are few others. Clinton’s Political strategist, James Carville and his former Attorney, Bob Bennett are also present to give their opinions. Even Lewinsky’s father is a part of the 3-night event series. Barney Frank, the Former Congressman and Tom Daschle, the Former Senator are seen in the documentary as well. Paula Jones’ attorney and advisors are a part of the movement too. Inputs were recorded from Clintons’ friends and family as they were from Lewinsky’s family and friends.
The Clinton Affair Plot: What is it about?
The Clinton Affair is the story of Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. In the #MeToo era, the story of the young intern falling for the most powerful man on the planet and the aftermath of everything and the consequences of their actions has been put into this 6 episode series. We have everyone who considered either Bill Clinton or Monica Lewinsky close to them, giving statements about that era. Some people sided with Lewinsky as they considered it sexual assault, but others sided with Clinton who stated that Lewinsky was willingly involved with him, before which he straight out refused to have any sexual relations with her. ABC News wrote in an article, “Over the course of two years, they had multiple sexual encounters and even seen exchanging gifts” to which Lewinsky replied, “when I tell you that I never expected to feel this way about him. And I am not kidding you”.
Monica recalls being confronted by the FBI who threatened her for denying the fact that she had relations with the president as they needed her statement to prove him guilty, but she refused to do so. In this documentary, she even said that “At one point, I remember looking out the window and thinking, the only way to fix this is to kill myself, to jump out the window. I was horrified and afraid of what this is going to do to my life” Later, Lewinsky struck a deal for total immunity in exchange for giving up many key pieces of evidence that played a major role in proving Clinton guilty.
Emmy-winning director Blair Foster breathes authenticity into a story we thought we knew and presents a series that best describes President Clinton’s impeachment as it happened. He said, “I thought I knew a lot about President Clinton’s impeachment because I lived through it. However, when I began this project, I quickly realized much of what I thought I knew was incomplete, or worse, inaccurate. My goal for this series was to do a deep dive into the facts and speak to as many people as possible who were involved. The deeper I got the clearer it became that this series is as much about the present day as it is about the 1990s. To borrow a phrase from Barbara Tuchman, this series serves as a ‘distant mirror’ on our current political situation and is far more timely than I ever anticipated.”
The Clinton Affair Season 2 Release date: When will it premiere?
The Clinton Affair season 1 premiered on November 18, 2018. As far as the next season goes, we don’t have an official announcement yet. Considering the fact that the show is a six-part mini-series, and limited series almost never get follow-up seasons, chances of it getting renewed is slim. Our best guess is that in the unlikely scenario that the show does get renewed, Clinton Affair season 2 can release sometime in 2021. We will update this section as soon as we hear more.
