The Indian entertainment space is increasingly getting packed with new web series being released almost every month. A few of them have also made their mark with their distinct narration and engaging storylines. For instance, ‘Sacred Games‘, ‘Inside Edge’, ‘Breathe‘, and ‘Made in Heaven‘ have done quite well. Following suit is ‘The Family Man’, an Indian drama web television series, created by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K, which is a story about a regular man from a middle-class family, executing covert missions under the National Investigation Agency. The show airs on Amazon Prime Video and is produced by D2R Films.
The show’s first season was received well. Now the question is, will there be a ‘The Family Man’ season 2? Here’s everything we know about it.
The Family Man Cast
‘The Family Man’ is headlined by Manoj Bajpayee as Srikant Tiwari. A multiple award winner, Bajpayee’s acting breakthrough came with ‘Satya’, after which he appeared in several movies such as ‘Aligarh’, ‘Kaun’, ‘Rajneeti’, and ‘Gangs of Wasseypur‘. He won the best actor award at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards for ‘Aligarh’. Joining him as the female protagonist is Priyamani, the winner of the best actress in India’s National Film Award for ‘Paruthiveeran’. She plays Suchitra. The cast also includes Sharib Hashmi (‘Slumdog Millionaire’), Neeraj Madhav (‘Charlie’), Sharad Kelkar (‘Boichek’), Sunny Hinduja (‘Aasma’), Gul Panag (‘Manorama Six Feet Under’), and Shreya Dhanwantary (‘The Girl in Me’).
If season 2 is commissioned, we definitely expect the main cast to be back.
Family Man Plot: What is it about?
‘The Family Man’ is basically the story of “a middle-class guy, who is also a world class spy”. Srikant Tiwari is a secret agent, working for a special cell of India’s National Intelligence Agency, who has to thwart plans of terrorists threatening to disrupt the country’s peace. His task is to predict attacks before they even happen. Additionally, he also needs to protect his family from the impact of a covert, grueling, and low-paying government job. Caught in this endless tangle, he has to incessantly try to balance both parts of his life. Srikant’s confidant and professional partner is JK and he shares a much more comfortable relationship with him than he does with his wife Suchitra.
Suchi and her kids believe that their family’s breadwinner is an underpaid government employee. They think that all he does is tend to piled-up papers on his desk and they don’t shy away from pointing that out more than once. However, the truth is completely different. Srikant toils away as the senior analyst in a top-secret intelligence organization, a mysterious branch of RAW. The team conducts mass surveillance in an attempt to establish common patterns and prevent upcoming terrorist attacks.
Bringing in a combo of workplace comedy and a family sitcom, ‘The Family Man’ perfectly navigates between home issues and subcontinental geo-politics. In one instance, Sri uses advanced surveillance software to hack into his daughter’s phone and check if she has any boyfriends. But he also uses the same method to spy on a group of college kids who are planning a political uprising.
Across its 10 episodes, ‘The Family Man’ manages to perfectly stick to its investigative thriller narration. But the show is packed with moments of spot-on humor. In one of the scenes, we witness Srikant receiving a brief about three terrorists. But just after the session is over and he is about to leave, he inquires about his impending home loan. After all, he is a family man first! And this is to be expected.
Writers and creators Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. are experts when it comes to unorthodox storytelling. We have seen examples of their unconventional understanding of the world in masterpieces such as ‘Go Goa Gone’ and ‘Stree’. We witness a similar pattern in the narration here as well. As Srikant tries to balance his professional and personal lives, we cannot help but laugh at the man’s helplessness. An engaging yet a funny spy series, with to-the-point one-liners and slick thrills, ‘The Family Man’ resembles Netflix’s ‘Bard of Blood’ in concept. However, the tone is completely different.
Season 2 will most likely continue following Srikant on his various covert missions while also doing his middle class chores.
When Will The Family Man Season 2 Release?
‘The Family Man’ season 1 released on Amazon Prime Video globally on September 20, 2019. All of its 10 episodes premiered on the same date on the platform. Now as far as a second season goes, Amazon is yet to greenlight a second season. But creators Raj and D.K. have already said that they have plans for making another season of the addictive spy drama.
