Co-created by Ethan Hawke and Mark Richard, ‘The Good Lord Bird’ is an abolition period dramedy based on the eponymous 2013-published novel by James McBride. It follows an abolitionist leader, John Brown – as the latter embarks on a holy crusade to put an end to slavery. In his journey, Brown becomes an important contributor to the famous 1859 raid at Harpers Ferry. Although the raid is planned to light a slave revolt, it results in the Civil War.
‘The Good Lord Bird’ may be set in the 1800s, but it highlights matters about race and gender, which are quite relevant in contemporary times. In fact, the show’s original release was pushed back from August 2020 to October 2020 – to serve as a more fitting story, which addresses the ongoing systemic racism in America. With appropriate themes and content, the inaugural installment of the series opened to favorable reviews. And this makes us wonder if we will see another iteration of the critically acclaimed drama. Well, let’s find out!
The Good Lord Bird Season 2 Release Date
‘The Good Lord Bird’ season 1 premiered on October 4, 2020, on Showtime. It wrapped up with its seventh episode on November 15, 2020. Each episode has a runtime of 46–57 minutes each.
In spite of the good reviews received by the first edition, a follow-up installment seems highly unlikely. Why? Well, the Showtime series is adapted from the standalone, award-winning, eponymous novel. And season 1 covers the entire content of the source material. Moreover, the network had branded it as a limited event right from the start. Therefore, considering the above factors, ‘The Good Lord Bird’ season 2 is most likely canceled.

The Good Lord Bird Plot: What is it About?
The story kicks off with Onion, a young slave from Kansas territory, having a fateful run-in with abolitionist John Brown in 1856. After Onion is freed by Brown, the latter recruits him to his army – whose goal is to end slavery. Eventually, they plan to take control of Harpers Ferry – a mission that ends in disaster. Onion and a few others manage to escape, but Brown is captured and later executed. However, Onion returns one last time to say goodbye to the ‘old man’ and his spiritual father.
