The dark comedy is about a high-class woman’s struggle to maintain the veneer of a perfect family tag in front of society while trying to bury the dark secrets of the family. The show’s episodes unfold many subplots and backstories that speak about family values, class, status, and loneliness. It is entirely in Spanish but Netflix has that covered thanks to subtitles.

La Casa de las Flores Plot: What is it about?
‘The House of Flowers’ series is a dark comedy that unfolds the hidden secrets of a highly disorganized but affluent Mexican family who own an upscale flower shop. Virginia de la Mora struggles to maintain the social status of the family in society by covering up their flaws and misdeeds. The de la Mora family gets a rude shock after learning that there is a cabaret in the same locality where they live which bears the same name as their flower shop. This makes them unearth a lot of dark secrets about their family history. Virginia is unaware of the fact that her husband had a mistress and bore children with her. After knowing that his mistress passed away, the patriarch brings her children into his current family without divulging the true identity of the children.
The show has a lot of subplots and backstories that make the show engaging and gripping as they speak about social issues like race, homosexuality, class in society, and family values. The essence of the show is about showering your family with love, supporting and standing by them no matter what. It also emphasizes the necessity to learn to forgive the mistakes committed by our loved ones no matter how difficult it is. The series also throws light on how a seemingly perfect family struggles to be in sync with each other.
What stands out about the show is how it combines all the seediness that is to be expected of a telenovela and presents it in a classy fashion. ‘The House of Flowers’ has everything, from sudden paternity learning, scheming, sex tape leaking, backstabbing, relationship ruining and plenty of very steamy sex. However, the show stands out in making these soapy mechanisms appear very modern. There is a positive portrayal of a transgendered person and nuanced exploration of LGBT issues through the character of Maria.
The series also takes a look at the socioeconomic and racial divide in Mexico, while turning the lens on the idiosyncrasies and casual sexism that abounds within the de la Mora family. Virginia is the prime example of such conservatism when she says, “Whatever you are, bisexual, trisexual, gay, drag, whatever it is — you don’t have to say it”. However, there is much to be said for the progressive nature of the show in portraying that Virginia is obviously wrong and the other characters do not agree with her. However, the repression of sexuality and sexual preferences to fit into the scheme of the heteronormative expectations of society is something that has long plagued everyone and ‘The House of Flowers’ takes a bold stab at it, while managing to remain enjoyable due to all the drama it packs.
Season 2 sees the show getting even better and spicier thanks to all the drama that will arise from new relationships and coming out of the closet. It is fascinating to see how the de la Mora continues to maintain their position of respect in society while following their own desires.
In season 3, we expect to see the series focus more on gender issues while keeping the content fun and relatable, as viewers get hooked to the antics of the de la Mora family, who show that no matter what, a family should always stick together.
