Netflix’s violent historical epic, ‘The Last Kingdom’, is based on ‘The Saxon Stories’ by Bernard Cornwell. The crowded, racy, and eventful series is noteworthy for one reason — increasing body counts in each of its installments. You start a season and you don’t have any idea about who is going to die next. With so many of the central characters either dead in the previous outings or having reached the end of their arcs in season 4, fans are wondering if there are enough people left to headline a potential ‘The Last Kingdom’ season 5. Here’s everything we know.
The Last Kingdom Season 5 Release Date
‘The Last Kingdom’ season 4 premiered on April 26, 2020, on Netflix, in all its entirety of 10 episodes.
As far as the next season goes, Netflix is yet to confirm anything. However, we already know that the show is loosely based on Bernard Cornwell’s ‘The Saxon Stories’ — which comprises 12 books, with a 13th to be released in October 2020. Since seasons 1 to 4 cover the events of the first eight books, there’s still a lot to cover in Uhtred’s saga (if we go by the source material). Even lead star Alexander Dreymon had earlier expressed his willingness to appear in the show if it continues in the future. Moreover, the immense fanbase of the series has led to increased interest in the original source material. What’s more? Cornwell renamed his books as ‘The Last Kingdom’ series after posting a note on his website.
All factors considered, it is unlikely that Netflix will pull the plug on such a breakout hit anytime soon. News of renewal should be out in the coming months. We expect ‘The Last Kingdom’ season 5 to release sometime in 2022.
The Last Kingdom Season 5 Cast: Who Can be in it?
In season 5, Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred of Bebbanburg will definitely make a comeback. Joining him across the seasons is a sprawling cast of main and recurring actors, who have changed over the years (because of plot demands).
In season 4, the returning actors are Ian Hart as Father Beocca, Toby Regbo as Aethelred, Emily Cox as Brida, Timothy Innes as King Edward, Eliza Butterworth as Aelswith, Mark Rowley as Finan, Millie Brady as Aethelflaed, Magnus Bruun as Cnut, Jeppe Beck Laursen as Haesten, and Joseph Milson as Aelfric. New additions include Stefanie Martini as Eadith, Jamie Blackley as Eardwulf, and Ruby Hartley as Stiorra.
In season 5, we expect most of the lead stars to make comebacks, joined by a couple of new faces.
The Last Kingdom Season 5 Plot: What Can it be About?
In season 3, King Alfred finally dies after succumbing to his illness. Alfred’s nephew Aethelwold is killed by Uhtred. Uhtred’s sister, Thyra, also meets her death after her house is set on fire. Uhtred’s ally, the witch named Skade bids her farewell as well.
Season 4 takes off right after the events of season 3’s finale, following Alfred’s death. With the entire kingdom in chaos, new alliances are made and old ones are fractured. Uhtred thinks this is the right time to declare war on his uncle Aelfric and take back his ancestral home, Bebbanburg. However, Uhtred eventually realizes that he should follow Alfred’s dream of uniting everyone into one kingdom. He finally takes a call and decides to join politics.
Season 5 should continue Uhtred’s journey from here and follow him as he keeps on carrying out his multiple crusades.
