The New Pope Episode 1 Recap:

The first episode of ‘The New Pope’ begins with a woman giving a sponge bath to Lenny Belardo who is also known as Pope Pius XIII while his heart monitor is beeping and he is in a coma. Then, it is revealed that after his heart attack, Belardo has been in a state of coma with three heart transplants not having worked.

Moreover, the Vatican is in a rather tumultuous state. There have been scandals and threats from Islamic fundamentalist groups. Cardinal Voiello, in these troubled times thinks that a new pope must be elected for people to look up to. While his advisors think he cannot be elected as the Pope. Voiello intends on convincing them to vote for a man that he can control.

However, the new pope, Francis II decides to allow refugees into the Vatican and sell the church’s assets to help the poor. He has a mysterious heart attack soon and Voiello goes to visit Brannox in England to persuade him to become the new Pope.
