Some might argue that television has made us numb towards scandalous and dark events, given the fact that so many intense dramas cash in on impactful and often ethically questionable actions. However, HBO’s ‘The New Pope’ brings back that discomfort that such scenes and plots are meant to have with its unabashed portrayal of politics in the Vatican.
‘The New Pope’ can be considered to be the second season of ‘The Young Pope.‘ It was, in fact, announced as the second installment of the series. The show follows a new man, Sir John Brannox taking over the papacy as Pope Pius XIII hangs in a coma.
If you think that the immorality has been toned down in the series due to its premise centering around the Catholic Church, think again! It has everything from cardinals engaging in sexual activity to bribery and so much more!

The New Pope Season 1 Episode 4 Recap:
The fourth episode of ‘The New Pope’ sees the newly elected Pope, John Brannox exercising his power as a routine day in the functioning of the Vatican City is portrayed. However, his sailing is already going rather roughly. To begin with, a common man insults him openly and nobody stands up for him.
Brannox meets Marilyn Manson and discusses public relations with him. In a rather satirical moment, Manson tells Brannox that he had assumed he was meeting Pope Pius XIII.
Brannox then tells Voiello and Sofia about his meeting. He tells them that everybody needs to know who the new pope is. He is shown to be smitten by Sofia and imagines seeing her have sex with Tomas while Gutierrez is making a confession.
Then, he is seen being pursued by Cardinal Spalletta who wants to get close to him. Thirsty for power, Spalletta attempts to gift Brannox a Bentley. Eventually, Brannox makes him his secretary, giving him the authority to look after creative decisions, offering him the power to do “everything [that Brannox does]…not wish to do.”
Moreover, Brannox is shown admitting that he suspects Voiello of killing Francis II. Elsewhere, the nuns are shown protesting due to the events of the previous episodes. Voiello switches off the Wi-Fi, leading to Sister Lisette being unable to use social media to rally other nuns.
Guttierez gets visited by Freddie: the man he had met in ‘The Young Pope’ and the two end up having sex. Then, the Italian finance minister meets up with Brannox to let him know that the government might be scrapping the eight per thousand rule which allows religious institutions to get funding directly from the taxes paid by the people. This forces Brannox to hand over the duties of looking after the Vatican’s finances to Tomas, in order to get on Spalletta’s good side. Spalletta will use his influence with the finance ministry in return.
