The New Pope S01 E06: What’s in Store?

HBO’s ‘The New Pope‘ picks up the papal reigns from ‘The Young Pope’ and somewhat serves as the second season of the latter show. The series continues to depict the realpolitik at the Vatican with characteristic HBO treatment, boasting of high production value and an all-boxes-checked approach.

The New Pope Season 1 Episode 5 Recap:

The fifth episode of the first season of ‘The New Pope’ sees Sharon Stone make a guest appearance. She meets Brannox in a scene that satirizes ‘Basic Instinct.‘ Brannox wants to know how the Vatican can be more “eloquent.”

Stone makes the suggestion that the Church should focus more on art and allow gay marriage. However, Brannox seems slightly apprehensive of the idea, probably because he realizes that he might not have the kind of sway to pass such a major reform.

Meanwhile, Gutierrez gives in to his temptation once again with Freddie. Voiello meets Bauer in a theater after being unable to meet with Brannox.

On a more pressing note, however, an Islamic fundamentalist group attacks a beach in France, forcing Brannox to rise up to the action. However, apart from an effective speech, he does not seem to have a plan of action yet.

However, he does have something in mind to put an end to all the adultery within the clergy. He wants to allow the priests to marry! He meets Sofia at the catacombs and tells her about his plan to let the priests marry.

Meanwhile, Pope Pius has been showing some progress. Apparently, after breathing 414 times, he lets out a sigh. His breathing is broadcast on the radio and causes the masses to start talking about it.
