‘The Orville’ is an American science fiction comedy drama television series that airs on the Fox network. Created by famed (and arguably controversial) comedy actor Seth MacFarlane, the show tracks the journeys of the space exploration ship, the Orville, and its crew as they travel across the galaxy on a variety of missions. Interestingly, MacFarlane’s love for ‘Star Trek’ is quite apparent in ‘The Orville’, which borrows heavily from the franchise’s visual style. However, in its thrust, ‘The Orville’ is quite different from the ‘Star Trek’ franchise, and has a strong focus on light comedy and themes of morality.
For those unaware, ‘The Orville’ is a relatively new show that first aired on September 10, 2017. Despite Season 1 getting mixed (and even confused) reactions, Fox decided to renew the show a couple of months later, announcing the renewal on November 2, 2017. More than a year later, Season 2 of the show made its way to viewers’ screens, premiering on December 30, 2018. Notably, Season 2 made up for Season 1’s disappointing debut, and managed to earn brownie points from critics and audiences alike. Now fans are waiting for the third season. Here’s everything we know about it.
The Orville Cast: Who’s in it?
As far as the cast of the show is concerned, ‘The Orville’ has quite a few major characters.
Leading the pack is Seth MacFarlane as Captain Ed Mercer, the commander of the exploratory ship, the Orville. At Mercer’s side is his ex-wife and first officer, Commander Kelly Grayson, who is played by Adrianne Palicki.
Penny Johnson Jerald plays the role of the Orville’s chief medical officer, Dr. Claire Finn, and Mark Jackson plays the role of Isaac, the ship’s chief science and engineering officer. Mercer’s best friend and the ship’s helmsman, Lt. Gordon Malloy, is played by Scott Grimes, while Halston Sage and Peter Macon play the roles of chief of security Lt. Alara Kitan and second officer Lt. Cmdr. Bortus, respectively. Another important character in the show is the Orville’s navigator, Lt. John LaMarr, who is played by J. Lee.
Apart from these main characters, the show has several supporting characters such as Admiral Halsey (played by Victor Garber), Kylden (played by Chad Coleman), and Lt. Yaphit (voiced by Norm MacDonald), among others. The full list is quite exhaustive.
If the show gets renewed for a third season, we expect the main cast members to reprise their roles. Several supporting cast members are also expected to make a comeback if Season 3 is given a green light.
The Orville Plot: What is it about?
Being a science fiction show about space exploration, ‘The Orville’, expectedly, takes place in the distant future. The events of the show take place in the 25th century – a time when the Earth and other planets having intelligent life have forged an interstellar alliance called the Planetary Union. However, the Planetary Union’s quest to explore the far reaches of the galaxy are often marred by interference from rogue factions who seek assert their own dominion on the galaxy.
Set in this backdrop, the show follows the adventures of Captain Ed Mercer and his crew aboard the Orville, a not-so-top-of-the-line exploratory spaceship belonging to the Planetary Union which is entrusted to Mercer’s care. The command of the ship is given to Mercer shortly after his divorce, which takes place after Mercer catches his wife cheating with an alien. Emotionally traumatized by the experience, Mercer decides to try and get his life together by taking command of the ship and undertaking diplomatic, exploratory, and supply missions. However, things take a turn for the worse for Mercer when he finds out that his wife, Commander Kelly Grayson, has been assigned under his command as his first officer. Left with no choice, Mercer has to iron out his differences with his wife (often to hilarious effect) as they and the rest of the crew have to navigate treacherous journeys through space and rise to numerous challenges to stay alive.
Despite this interesting and character-driven plot, Season 1 of ‘The Orville’ failed to make a lasting impact on television critics, who criticized it as a confused show with an identity crisis, and gave it a poor score of 31% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, after Season 2 released and delved into the characters more, critics were left awed, and Season 2 was given a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Audiences, on the other hand, seem to have enjoyed the show quite a lot, and it enjoys an impressive overall rating of 7.9/10 on IMDb, after over 44,000 votes.
The Orville Season 3 Release Date: When will it premiere?
‘The Orville’ season 2 premiered on December 30, 2018, and indeed caused a stir among critics and viewers with its timely comic humour, thoughtful approach, and insightful commentary on relationships and life. However, despite this improvement in quality, the show’s viewership and ratings took some hit. Despite the drop in viewership, we have good news for the fans. On May 11, 2019, Fox renewed the show for a third season. Though, on July 20, 2019, in a surprise move it was announced that the show will be shifting to Hulu from third season onwards.
Unfortunately, no release date has been announced for the third season till now. The previous seasons came within 15 months of each other, so our best guess is that ‘The Orville’ season 3 can release sometime in March, 2020. We will update this section as soon as we hear more.
