‘The Outsider’ is an HBO miniseries adapted from Stephen King’s book of the same name. The show begins with an open investigation, following the murder of a young boy, the details of which are horrifying, to say the least. All the fingers point to a suburban father who is then taken into custody, but he is seemingly innocent. How? Well, he has an airtight alibi to support his case.
The crime drama has been adapted to series by Academy Award and Emmy Nominee Richard Price, whose stellar resume includes ‘The Deuce,’ ‘The Wire,’ and ‘The Night Of.’ Andrew Bernstein (‘Jack Ryan’) serves as the primary director, while Jason Bateman and Charlotte Brändström (‘The Witcher’) direct two and one episodes, respectively.
The Outsider Cast: Who is in it?
Golden Globe winner Jason Bateman (yeah, yeah you guessed it) is at the center of the plot as Terry Maitland, a baseball coach and a family man, who is taken into custody after several eye-witnesses and evidences accuse him of murder but he swears he is innocent. Bateman’s career highlights include ‘Arrested Development,’ ‘Zootopia’ (voice), ‘Horrible Bosses,’ ‘Ozark,’ among many others. ‘Masters of Sex’ actor Julianne Nicholson plays Terry’s wife, Glory Maitland.
Primetime Emmy Award winner Ben Mendelsohn essays the primal character of detective Ralph Anderson, a gung-ho cop hellbent on proving Terry’s guilt. His recent works include ‘Bloodline,’ ‘Captain Marvel,’ and ‘The King.’ Multiple award-winning actor Mare Winningham plays Ralph’s wife, Jeannie Anderson.
‘Russian Doll’ actor Yul Vázquez plays detective Yunis Sablo from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Primetime Emmy Award Nominee Bill Kemp plays Terry’s friend and lawyer Howie Gold. He is known for ‘The Looming Tower,’ and ‘Molly’s Game.’ ‘Bad Times at the El Royale’ fame Cynthia Erivo enacts the character of Holly Gibney, a seasoned private detective who believes a supernatural being is behind the killing. The character of Holly Gibney is taken from ‘Mr. Mercedes,’ which is an adaptation of King’s Bill Hodges trilogy. ‘The Sinner’ and ‘Manifest’ actor Marc Menchaca plays Josh Hoskins, Ralph Anderson’s rival police officer.
In addition to these talented actors, ‘The Outsider’ also stars Frank Deal as Fred Peterson, Dayna Beilenson as Mildred Peterson, Paddy Considine (‘Hot Fuzz’) as the manager of a strip club, Claude Bolton, Jeremy Bobb (‘Jessica Jones’) as a private investigator Alec Pelley, hired by Howie, Duncan E. Clark as Frankie Peterson, Hettienne Park (‘Hannibal’) as Tomika Collins, Michael Esper as District Attorney Bill Samuels, and many more.
The Outsider Plot: What is it About?
The Outsider is a complex and terrifying story, revolving around the investigation into the gruesome killing of an 11-year-old boy, Frankie Peterson. Police detective Ralph Anderson sets out to investigate the case and arrests a reputed college coach Terry Maitland who is found on the crime scene with blood on him, seemingly guilty.
What initially appears to be an open-and-shut case, takes a confounding turn when Terry’s lawyer and friend Howie Gold puts forward a strong alibi in the form of a security footage that corroborates his presence at a writer’s conference in a nearby town at the time of the murder.
Struggling with conflicting pieces of evidence, Detective Anderson seeks help from a private investigator Holly Gibney, who hints at the presence of a supernatural force, acting as Terry’s Doppelganger. As the case unfolds, unexplainable things happen. Is Maitland innocent, or is this all a propaganda? Guess you will have to watch the show to find out!

Those who have already read the book, know how riveting and deeply disturbing it is. King is a master at crafting characters. He can even turn a mundane character like a clown, dog, cat, or the flu, into something terrifying. King focuses on the horrors of the real world, not based on weird things that occur to people but people that strange things happen to. And ‘The Outsider’ is a testament to the fact.
