‘The Pursuit of Love’ is a British period drama that follows the entwined lives of two cousins as they navigate the intricacies of romance and social expectations of British high society during the interwar years. Linda is the turbulent and dramatic force who launches herself into a string of disastrous affairs while Fanny chooses idyllic domestic life but soon finds that it doesn’t give her everything she wants. An impending war threatening to break out at any moment adds a further sense of urgency that makes instinctive decisions all the more attractive.
Throughout Linda and Fanny’s journeys, the two remain each other’s closest confidantes, and season 1 of the series wraps up on a somber note that is as revealing as it is vague. With one of the main characters seemingly gone, could there be another season? Here’s everything we know about ‘The Pursuit of Love’ season 2.
The Pursuit of Love Season 2 Release Date
‘The Pursuit of Love’ season 1 first premiered in the United Kingdom on May 9, 2021, on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Following its release in the home country, the show released across multiple countries on Amazon Prime on July 30, 2021.
As far as season 2 is concerned, there have been no official announcements regarding it being greenlit or not. Considering the show has just premiered its inaugural season, the network will likely be looking at its viewership numbers before committing to future seasons. However, audience numbers aside, it looks like ‘The Pursuit of Love’ will likely not see a season 2.
The miniseries is based on a novel by Nancy Mitford and concludes its story within the first season. One of the two main characters, Linda, also dies at the end of season 1, making it very difficult for the story to continue in the same vein. The story is narrated predominantly as a flashback and follows the lives of both the central characters in detail until World War 2, which is where it concludes. With one of its lead characters missing and being set amidst a war instead of an idyllic countryside, a follow-up season would make for a very different kind of tale than the show is positioned to be.
Of course, that being said, there is no lack of material, and many of the show’s kaleidoscopic characters could easily be the center of their own stories, most notably the flamboyant and enigmatic character of Lord Merlin. The show’s director and writer (who adapted the novel to screen) Emily Mortimer’s character The Bolter could also make for a fascinating central figure. However, these stories would be detached from the central dynamic of Linda and Fanny that the show focuses on.
Lastly, Nancy Mitford penned two sequels to ‘The Pursuit of Love’ titled ‘Love in a Cold Climate’ and ‘Don’t Tell Alfred.’ Though not as popular as their predecessor, the aforementioned novels could be used for potential future seasons. However, if ever adapted to screen, the makers would likely develop the novels into their own standalone miniseries. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that ‘The Pursuit of Love’ season 2 will get made.
