The Sinner S03 E04: What to Expect?

‘The Sinner’ returned for a third season this year with sky-high expectations. The series is a “whydunnit,” an inventive spin on the murder mystery genre. Basically, instead of creating suspense around who committed a crime, the series delves into why the crime was committed.

The person that committed the crime takes center stage with each season telling a different, self-sustained narrative. The current season sees Matt Bomer step into those shoes. He plays the character of Jamie, a Dorchester resident who gets into a car crash with his friend, Nick. However, Jamie decides to let his friend die by not calling 911 on time, on purpose. The season unravels the mystery surrounding Jamie’s reasoning and psyche that makes him do something sinister like that, in a slow-burn fashion.

The first episode sets up the premise of the season while the next two episodes depict how Jamie starts to lose his mind and become so mentally disturbed that he poses a threat to society. ‘The Sinner’ has been acclaimed for its witty writing and the third episode of the season truly proves the merit of the show’s writers.

It delves into Nietzschean philosophy and the way that it is weaved into a narrative is truly phenomenal. Towards the end of the episode, Jamie seeks help from detective Ambrose and the two head to a hospital to visit a shrink. However, Jamie flees the hospital, more troubled than before, making Ambrose concerned that he might do something harmful.

The Sinner Season 3 Episode 4 Spoilers: What to Expect?

There isn’t much mystery surrounding what to expect from the upcoming episode of ‘The Sinner.’ Jamie runs away from the hospital at the end of the third episode of the third season, and Ambrose is worried that he might harm somebody.

Here is what the fourth episode’s blurb says: “Ambrose pursues Jamie through New York City and tries to prevent another homicide.” Hence, we can expect a kind of manhunt where Ambrose and other police officers would try to desperately locate Jamie in the urban jungle of NYC.

However, the blurb for the fifth episode reveals some more information regarding what one can expect from the fourth episode: “Ambrose urges the NYPD to investigate Jamie for a new crime; Jamie struggles to salvage his life.”

From the above blurb, it is quite clear that Jamie gets involved in another crime in the fourth episode. However, since Ambrose needs to urge the NYPD to investigate Jamie, the crime might not actually be that straightforward. As in, it would probably be more indirect, akin to Nick’s death where Jamie didn’t actually commit the murder.

Now the question is, who would Jamie murder? Given his state of mind, it could be a complete stranger. That possibility cannot be discounted.

However, if one were to make a guess, it could be the dermatologist that Jamie was roommates with. He had attacked him with a lava lamp in the past. Plus, their equation does not seem to be the most amicable. The dermatologist offers to testify against Jamie, if need be, while conversing with Ambrose, remember?

Another guess could be the father of Jamie’s bright student, Emma. He speaks to Jamie quite rudely in the second episode since Jamie asks Emma to think more independently for her letter of recommendation. Additionally, during this time, Jamie also hallucinates Nick stabbing Emma’s father’s leg. Moreover, after Emma and Jamie’s conversation in the third episode, Emma’s parents have more complaints against Jamie.
