Is The Spanish Princess Season 3 Canceled?

The scintillating historical drama, ‘The Spanish Princess’, throws the spotlight on the titular character, Catherine of Aragon. After her wedding to King Henry VIII, Catherine becomes the Queen of England. Created as a sequel to ‘The White Queen’ and ‘The White Princess’, the show is developed by Emma Frost and Matthew Graham. This adaptation of the novels, ‘The Constant Princess’ and ‘The King’s Curse’ by Philippa Gregory, narrates a fascinating tale of scandals, politics, executions, divorce, and destruction. Now that the second season of ‘The Spanish Princess’ has ended, fans are already asking if there will be more from it. Our curiosity compelled us to dig further and here is everything we found out about ‘The Spanish Princess’ season 3.

The Spanish Princess Season 3 Release Date: Renewed or Canceled?

‘The Spanish Princess’ season 2 premiered on October 11, 2020, on Starz. It wrapped up with its eighth episode on November 29, 2020. Now, as far as a third edition goes, here is why it definitely won’t happen. ‘The Spanish Princess’ was always planned as a 16-episode, two-part limited event. The show was meant to address the earlier years of Catherine’s marriage to King Henry VIII — a storyline that completes its run within the first two seasons.

In fact, when the show was renewed for its second edition, showrunners Emma Frost and Matthew Graham said in a statement to THR: “We are thrilled to tell the next chapter of Catherine of Aragon’s story as she negotiates war, politics, and marriage to the most dangerous King of England. As a company that always produces compelling and dynamic projects, Starz has been a great creative partner, and we look forward to concluding Catherine’s journey with them.”

Starz’s COO Jeffrey Hirsch added, “Emma and Matthew have created an alluring portrait of one of the most familiar narratives in English history. Viewers are intrigued by Catherine of Aragon’s story, and this eight-episode conclusion will give us the opportunity to tell it in its entirety.” Considering the aforementioned factors, we can safely assume that ‘The Spanish Princess’ season 3 stands canceled. Of course, if you wish to know what happened thereafter, you always have ‘The Tudors’!

On a good note though, Starz is planning on another royal series, based on the life of Eleanor of Aquitaine — queen consort of both France and England in the 12th century. The show will be a tv adaptation of Alison Weir’s 1999-published biography about Eleanor and an accompanying novel, ‘Captive Queen’.

The Spanish Princess Cast: Who is in it?

‘The Spanish Princess’ features a sprawling ensemble cast, led by Charlotte Hope as Princess Catherine of Aragon, who later becomes the Queen of England. Joining her is Ruairi O’Connor as King Henry VIII, Sai Bennett as Princess Mary Tudor, Andrew Buchan as Thomas More, Laura Carmichael as Maggie Pole, Philip Cumbus as Thomas Wolsey, Peter Egan as General Thomas Howard, Chloe Harris as Bessie Blount, Georgie Henley as Meg Tudor, Alan McKenna as Sir Richard Pole, and Olly Rix as Edward Stafford, among others.

The Spanish Princess Plot: What is it About?

The second season of ‘The Spanish Princess’ narrates the events that eventually lead to the collapse of Catherine’s wedlock to King Henry VIII. Toward the end, Henry, frustrated with not having a son and surrounded by flattering courtiers, descends into madness. He finds his new love interest, Anne Boleyn. Maggie discloses that Catherine had indulged in a scandal with Arthur. Catherine, after all the allegations, decides to leave the court on her own terms. She sends Mary a letter where she writes: “I love you as I love him. I am his wife, Queen of England, and God’s obedient servant, but you are England’s future.”
