‘The Strain’ is a horror drama based TV series that airs on FX and first premiered on July 13, 2014. It has been created by Guillermo del Toro, who is known for works like ‘Pan’s Labyrinth‘ and ‘The Shape of Water‘, and Chuck Hogan. The horror series is based on a novel that goes by the same name, which too was co-written by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan.
The development process of ‘The Strain’ is quite an intriguing one. Originally, Guillermo del Toro had pitched his idea of ‘The Strain’ to network channel Fox, as a weekly series quite a few years ago, to which Fox responded that it should be displayed as a comedy series. Quite obviously, Toro rejected this idea and started writing the novel. Due to certain weaknesses and drawbacks, he collaborated with Chuck Hogan who could fill these gaps.
On publishing the first novel, quite a few networks and studios showed a keen interest in obtaining the rights to the book series. But del Toro and Hogan were not ready to give them up yet. They wanted to complete the series, so as to not let the television networks have any rights in determining the plot of the story and its future. On completing the trilogy, FX was the one who bought the rights and promised to stick to the books and follow them closely.
So what is ‘The Strain’ all about? Well, it starts with the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, who heads New York’s Canary Project in the CDC. When his team is called to investigate a plane with almost no survivors, they discover a viral outbreak which has similarities with an old strain of vampirism. As the virus starts spreading, Goodweather must not only work with his team but also alongside the remaining unaffected residents of the city, as they wage a war for the survival of humanity.
In the hands of a veteran horror genre aficionado like del Toro, the show was always bound to be a success, and critics have remarked as much, saying, ” ‘The Strain’ makes the most of its familiar themes through an effective mix of supernatural thrills and B-movie gore – though it may not appeal to everyone”.
The Strain Cast: Who is in it?
The cast of ‘The Strain’ is led by Corey Stoll in the role of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, the head of the Canary team in New York’s CDC. Stoll is a familiar face in the entertainment business, having appeared in several roles like in ‘House of Cards‘ and ‘Ant-Man‘. Kevin Durand appears as Vasiliy Fet, a rat exterminator with Ukranian roots, who gets caught up in this war for humanity. There are several other characters, including good guys, and those with interests to further this strain of vampirism, but the only one worth mentioning is the central antagonist of the show, simply called The Master. He is one of the seven ancient vampires, and on the show, this part is voiced by Robin Atkin Downes.
The Strain Plot: What is it about?
‘The Strain’ is not for the faint-hearted. It is quite the ‘sends chills down one’s spine’ type of show. For the people who are not familiar with the show or novels at all, ‘The Strain’ can completely freak and gross you out. Just by viewing their ad campaigns, one can get creeped out fast.
It starts off with a plane that descends and lands in the John F Kennedy airport, with the lights remaining off and the doors shut. Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, an epidemiologist, and his team are sent to the scene to investigate and have a closer look. Onboard the stationary flight, they discover 200 corpses and 4 survivors. The situation starts getting out of hand as the bodies begin disappearing from the morgue. Dr. Goodweather and his team find themselves trying to protect not just their loved ones but the entire city from what’s about to hit them.
As the show progresses, important questions like what is the difference between the actual dead people and the vampire survivors? Why were only four chosen among the other 200 in the plane? What sort of horrible fate will they meet at the hands of the villain or its virus?
The Hollywood Reporter has best summed up the show, saying, “Is there a mythology to ‘The Strain’? Sure, but it doesn’t seem that important or meaty (so far). Is there something like, say, an existential undercurrent to ‘The Strain’? Uh, not really. It’s a horror series that gets gooey with blood and biting and gore. It might make you curl up on the couch in fear. It might make you excited to see the next episode because the previous hour entertained you. That’s probably all that FX wants. And that’s really all you should expect.”
The Strain Season 5 Release Date: When will it premiere?
‘The Strain’ Season 4 premiered on July 16, 2017. It was announced beforehand by FX that this would mark the finale of the show. While the reason might be anything, from declining viewership to a creative decision made by the showrunners to creative differences, the fact remains that ‘The Strain’ got the chance to tie up all loose ends and finish on a brilliant note.
While we hate to say goodbye to the show, there is no denying that ‘The Strain’ Season 5 stands canceled.
