‘The X-Files’ is probably the most famous science fiction series in the history of television. It definitely is the longest running sci-fi show in the US. The original run was on Fox from September 10, 1993, to May 19, 2002. it was then revived by the network and first premiered on January 24, 2016. The show has led to two movies and has laid the foundation of an entire franchise including spin-off shows and merchandise.
The show bears similarities to ‘The Twilight Zone‘ and ‘Twin Peaks‘ in that it dabble with the possibility of the paranormal. It has received acclaim throughout its run, with its actors receiving praise for their performances. It started off as any other regular series but soon became a pop culture sensation that tapped into the people’s mistrust of the government and large institutions, while combining it with conspiracy theories and spirituality.
So what do we have on our hands in ‘The X-Files’? What we do have is the tendency of wanting to believe, which is personified by special agent Fox Mulder, and to contrast this we have the skepticism and scientific rationale of Dana Scully. They both work for the FBI and Chris Carter, the show’s creator, decided to swing another way than the normal trend by making the man the believer and the woman the skeptic. However, over the seasons as Mulder and Scully work together, they uncover secret conspiracies and their relation also evolves. ‘The X-Files’ mostly focuses on that except for my favorite part, which is the monster of the week episodes. Notably, critics have praised the show calling it one of the most culturally significant shows of the 1990s.
The X- Files Cast: Who is in it?
David Duchovny plays Fox Mulder, an FBI special agent allocated to the newly reopened X-Files division. He is a firm believer in the paranormal and the existence of extra-terrestrial life, however, as the series goes on, his faith diminishes. Gillian Anderson plays Dana Scully. She is a medical doctor and FBI special agent assigned to the X-Files. She does not believe in extra-terrestrial life. However, Mulder’s abduction convinces her of the possibilities. Mitch Pileggi as Walter Skinner, plays an assistant director at the FBI and a friend of Mulder and Scully’s.
The X- Files Plot: What is it about?
‘The X-Files’ follows the stories of two FBI agents Mulder and Scully. In a world where we all want to believe, the bureau apparently has a section of cases categorized as X-files because they are unsolved and have the marks of a supernatural or extraterrestrial presence. These cases fall to our duo. While Mulder is a believer and always looks for signs of the supernatural, Scully is the skeptic and the grounding force who brings Mulder back to the earth if his head is too up there in the clouds.
This balance of rationality with superstition is a formula that has worked for several shows, and ‘The X-Files’ has been somewhat of a trendsetter in this department. However, coming back to the story, as it progresses, our agents realize that there are bigger and darker forces at play that not only aim to impede their progress but are also not beyond using them as pawns in a game that is too big for them to comprehend. They also realize one other thing – their own government has been keeping proof of alien life a secret.
Naturally, with such realizations come the onset of paranoia, and Mulder and Scully grow increasingly close to one another, finding that they can only trust each other and a handful of others. Their relationship starts out platonically but soon enough evolves into something romantic. While the initial run about alien colonization was brilliant as a piece of storytelling, the reboot brought the threat much closer to home, making it more impactful.
If there is an upcoming season, it remains to be seen what direction the show takes, especially since the last season was rocked with the news of Gillian Anderson announcing that this was it for her role as Scully. She said, “It’s time for me to hang up Scully’s hat. It just is”.
The X- Files Season 12 Release Date: Will it happen?
‘The X-Files’ Season 11 premiered on January 3, 2018. While there has been no talk about Fox renewing the show for another season, fans were shocked to hear about the exit of Gillian Anderson. Even showrunner Carter was unsure about whether the show would go on without Scully, and he said, “For me, the show has always been Mulder and Scully. So the idea of doing the show without her isn’t something I’ve ever had to consider. Was her character given a proper goodbye? I think you will want to sit down and watch the series finale very carefully”.
Fox’s president, however, was more optimistic about getting Anderson back on board, and co-star Duchovny has said that he too had said goodbye to the character of Mulder several times, but always returned to it. So, will the show continue without Scully? In the past, the series has gone on without Mulder, so there is no reason why they cannot do without Scully. However, we will miss the perfect foil to Mulder’s character that Scully brings to the story. For now, there is no official news about the renewal of the show, leading us to believe that if the show comes back, the earliest ‘The X-Files’ Season 12 can release is in 2020.
