A joint venture between HBO, Sky Studio, Punchdrunk theatre company, Brat Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, and writer Dennis Kelly (‘Utopia’), ‘The Third Day’ is a mystery drama about two individuals (Jude Law and Naomie Harris) who find themselves in Osea Island in separate times. Visually stunning and crisply edited, the series offers a complex and unique view on the human condition and reality. Here is everything you need to know before its imminent release.

The Third Day Season 1 Release Date: When Will It Premiere?

The collaboration between Sky Studio and HBO has previously produced shows like ‘Chernobyl’ and ‘Catherine the Great’. As a result, there was some buzz when it came out that they are teaming up with Plan B, Punchdrunk, and Kelly for another series. ‘The Third Day’ was greenlit in June 2019. Filming took place between July and December 2019.

“Sky Studios is delighted to be partnering with Plan B, Punchdrunk International and HBO on this exciting series. The Third Day is the result of the intoxicating combined imaginations of Dennis Kelly and Punchdrunk International’s Felix Barrett and have resulted in astonishing scripts,” said Cameron Roach, who serves as Sky Studios, Sky UK and Ireland’s director of drama. “To see them brought to life under the direction of Marc Munden and with Jude Law at the helm of what promises to be a world class cast, is an incredibly exciting prospect.”

Casey Bloys, the head of HBO Entertainment, added, “Dennis and Felix have created something fresh and unique and we are thrilled to have this on HBO. We look forward to collaborating with Punchdrunk International, Marc and Jude as well as furthering our relationship with SKY and Plan B Entertainment.”

Initially, ‘The Third Day’ was supposed to premiere on HBO on May 11, 2020, followed by the show’s UK release on Sky Atlantic a day later. However, by then, the pandemic had broken out, which disrupted the show’s post-production, prompting the networks to postpone the release for the time being. ‘The Third Day’ season 1 is finally ready for a release on September 14, 2020, at 9 pm ET. It will be released in the UK a day later.

What is The Third Day about?

The production of ‘The Third Day’ was segmented into three blocks. The first block, titled ‘Summer’, has three episodes, ‘Friday – The Father’, ‘Saturday – The Son’, and ‘Sunday – The Ghost’, which will be aired on HBO on September 14, September 21, and September 28, respectively. These three episodes are set to focus on Law’s character’s Sam, who comes to Osea Island to return a teenage girl to her home after he saved her from committing suicide. This section is directed by Marc Munden.

The second block is titled ‘Autumn’, which is not exactly a collection of episodes but a live theatrical broadcast that will take place on October 3. Law is set to appear in it. This is bound to be a fascinating experience considering Punchdrunk’s history with live performances. This one will be helmed by Felix Barrett. The third section, ‘Winter’, focuses on Harris’ character Helen and her two daughters who are on the island for a vacation, but quickly discover that no one is willing to give them lodging. The episodes that are part of ‘Winter’ are ‘Monday – The Mother’, ‘Tuesday – The Daughter’, and ‘Last Day – The Dark’, which are slated to be broadcast on October 5, October 12, and October 19, respectively. Philippa Lowthorpe is directing this section.
