Tom Anderson is the co-founder of MySpace, a social networking website which he co-founded with Chris DeWolfe in 2003. He was named Thomas Anderson by his parents and was born on November 8, 1970, in Escondido, California. He attended San Pasqual High in Escondido during which time he was a computer hacker who managed to crack the security system of Chase Manhattan Bank. The FBI tracked him but did not arrest him due to his age. He attended the University of California, Berkeley where he studied Rhetoric and English. He is also the lead singer of the band “Swank”. Anderson lived in Taiwan for a while before he came back to study Critical Film Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Anderson in 2000 worked as a product tester and copywriter at XDrive. It is at XDrive that he met DeWolfe. He and Dewolfe founded ResponseBase, direct marketing company after XDrive went bankrupt in 2001. In late 2002, they sold ResponseBase to Brad Greenspan’s eUniverse. He started MySpace with other employees of eUniverse. He actually founded MySpace in response to Friendster and its policy of blocking anybody who did not use a real name. Intermix Media became the successor of eUniverse. News Corp bought Intermix Media and MySpace and Anderson became the president of the company in 2005. News Corp spent $580 million to acquire MySpace. In 2009, he was replaced as president in MySpace. He is at the moment enjoying retirement and is still pondering on what he will do next.
