Top Chef Season 17 Episode 1 Recap:

In the first episode of Top Chef season 17, which takes place in LA, we meet 15 all-star contestants from previous seasons. We also get to see the return of our favorite host Padma Lakshmi and judges Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons. Well, the competition starts. The first challenge tasks the chefs to transform basic ingredients like artichokes, oranges, and almonds into specified delicacies. The contestants are divided into three teams of five each in this round. The groups consist of the following members:

Blue Team: Nini, Stephanie, Karen, Lisa, and Brian M.
Green Team: Lee Anne, Gregory, Angelo, Eric, and Jenn
Red Team: Kevin, Jamie, Joe, Melissa, and Bryan V.

The elimination round requires the chefs to cook beside beachside bonfires. In the end, Gregory is chosen as the winner of the day. His dish is charred salmon with grilled peaches and roasted chili dressing. Now, for the sad part. Joe, Lee Anne, and Brian M. are voted to be at the bottom. Each of their cuisines has drawbacks but Joe’s flatbread is really not up to the mark according to the judges. So well, after quite a brief stint, Joe Sasto is the first all-star chef to go home this season.
