How did the Tyler Perry Earn His Money and Wealth?
Tyler Perry, named Emmitt Perry Jr. at birth, was born in New Orleans on September 13, 1969. He had a tough childhood, marked by intense poverty, domestic abuse, and teen depression. Gradually, inspired by Oprah Winfrey, he took to writing for relief and became a playwright at the age of 18. In 1992, he came out with his first play titled ‘I Know I’ve Been Changed’, which dealt with domestic abuse and was inspired by his church-going background. Perry put his entire life savings at stake, but the play flopped at a local theatre, forcing him to live on the streets. However, the same production ran to packed audiences in 1998 and was moved to the much bigger Fox Theatres in 2015.
By this time, Perry had begun to get involved in film-making and acting, starting with the highly successful 2005 release ‘Diary of a Mad Black Woman’ with a worldwide collection of $50.6 million. He also adapted his stage play ‘Madea’s Family Reunion’ into a film, which grossed around $65 million in the US. By then, Perry had opened his own studio based in Atlanta. Perry’s next film was ‘Daddy’s Little Girls’ (2007), followed by ‘Why Did I Get Married?’ in the same year. The latter grossed over $38 million in just 10 days. Many of his movies were adapted from his plays. Subsequently came ‘Meet the Browns’ and ‘The Family That Preys’ in 2008 and ‘Madea Goes to Jail’ and ‘I Can Do Bad All by Myself’ in 2009. The next year saw the release of ‘Why Did I Get Married Too?’ and ‘For Colored Girls’.
Between this, Perry collaborated with Oprah Winfrey to produce the film ‘Precious’ in 2009 and made an appearance in ‘Star Trek’ in the same year.
