‘Undercover Billionaire’ is a reality TV series on Discovery Channel that follows self-made business tycoon, Glenn Stearns, attempting to build a million-dollar company from scratch — within a mere span of just three months. Produced by This is Just a Test, the documentary seems to adopt the prequel-concept of ‘Shark Tank’. Set in Erie, Pennsylvania, the show recently finished its first season. You must be wondering will there be a ‘Undercover Billionaire’ season 2? Here’s everything we know.
Undercover Billionaire Cast: Who’s in it?
Glenn Stearns, the main protagonist of the show, is the founder of Stearns Lending, LLC, a wholesale, retail and correspondent lender in the US that holds a position among the biggest mortgage lenders in the country. It is America’s fifth-largest privately held lender.
Born in a middle-class family with working parents in blue-collar jobs, Stearns was diagnosed with dyslexia at an early age and became a father at 14. However, in spite of all the challenges, he was the first from his family to graduate from college. After gathering a sprawling fortune from his mortgage company, he founded a settlement company, Carriage Escrow.
If the show comes back for season 2, it might feature a different entrepreneur altogether. We might also get a glimpse into how Stearns’ business is doing.
Undercover Billionaire Plot: What is it about?
The first season of ‘Undercover Billionaire’ attempts to test if Glenn Stearns can upgrade himself to the self-made man for the second time in his life. With only $100 in his pocket, he is given the task of setting up a million-dollar company in just 90 days! In order to do so, he is denied the luxury of his private jet and yacht and is dropped off at Erie, Pennsylvania. Here, he assumes the alias ‘Glenn Bryant’ — a normal individual from the US who has been juggling among various corporate jobs for the last three decades and now dreams of owning his own venture. Stearns, in this quest, cannot use his real identity, contacts or wealth.
As Stearns struggles to put his plans into action, he also shares valuable tips and practical knowledge on the tricks of building a successful business. However, in order to prove himself, he has to pitch in his million-dollar idea and convince a team (unaware of his status) to join him in his goal.
Across the episodes, we witness how Stearns has to depend on his principles, methods, and process that enabled him to become a billionaire in the first place. By the end of the season and after the allotted 3 months, the self-made entrepreneur, if successful, would be handing over the enterprise to the people who help him along the way. A financial evaluator determines the value of the new organization and if he finds that the worth is less than $1 million, Stearns would be putting his own $1 million into the business and into the people involved in the entire project. He also reveals his true name on the finale.
Of course, the concept of ‘Undercover Billionaire’ is challenging and is a complicated experiment. But the primary aim of the show is to stress on the fact that if someone can build an empire from scratch, anybody can. As per one of the dialogues in the narration, “Glenn Stearns will see once and for all if the dream is still possible in America.”
As the episodes unravel, we see how Stearns goes through actual struggles to cleverly use his $100 for daily survival, including eating and sleeping. He also discovers ways to earn cash so that he can go on till the next day. Isolated and on his own, he resorts to dozing off in his truck in the cold. On one episode, we even see him opening the door and vomiting repeatedly. If you did not know already, Stearns is a cancer survivor. So, he visits the hospital to make sure that his health is fine.
Stearns hopes that ‘Undercover Billionaire‘ will serve as an inspiration for upcoming entrepreneurs who have dreams and consider them impossible. He wants to prove them wrong. According to Stearns, he said that he is aware that people take his achievements for granted — claiming, “a lot of doors open [for him] because people go, ‘Hey, the guy’s got money! Maybe he can make things happen.” However, Stearns, wishes viewers to see a different aspect of his personality. He wants to answer this question: “What about the average person that doesn’t have money, that doesn’t have a lot of credentials behind them? Can you make something happen?”
Undercover Billionaire Season 2 Release Date: When will it premiere?
‘Undercover Billionaire’ season 1 premiered on August 6, 2019 and came to an end after eight episodes on September 23, 2019. As far as the next season goes, even though Discovery has not made an announcement, the show’s concept is so wild and original that it is very likely it will be renewed. If the show does make a comeback next year, of course, it will have to be with some other business owner willing to put himself or herself out there. You can expect ‘Undercover Billionaire’ season 2 to come out sometime in August, 2020.
