Unorthodox narrates the riveting tale of one woman’s search for independence. Part-English and part-Yiddish (with subtitles), this story is about the courageous Esther who flees her ultra-orthodox community in New York in order to have some control over life, her views, and her decisions.
Directed by Maria Schrader, the series takes a deep dive into “female emancipation, identity, and sexuality through the prism of a unique young woman’s experience”. Understandably, the first season opened to rave reviews from fans and critics alike. Now the next question is, when will Unorthodox season 2 release? Let’s answer the question right away.
Unorthodox Season 2 Release Date: Cancelled or Renewed?
Unorthodox season 1 released on March 26, 2020, on Netflix, in all its entirety of four episodes.
Now, first things first: Unorthodox had been dubbed as a mini-series right from the start. Moreover, its first season completely exhausts the content from its source material, the autobiography called ‘Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots’, penned by Deborah Feldman.
Hence, although the show did open to stellar reviews, its chances for a renewal are minimal. As of now, it looks likely that Unorthodox season 2 stands cancelled. However, in the unlikely event that another season is greenlit, Unorthodox season 2 may only release after 2022.
Unorthodox Cast: Who is in it?
The lead role of the protagonist, Esther, is played by Israeli actress Shira Haas, who has also appeared in ‘Shtisel’ and ‘The Zookeeper’s Wife’. Other actors in important roles are Amit Rahav as Yakov Shapiro and Jeff Wilbusch as Moische Lefkovitch.
When asked about her role in the show, Haas said: “I am beyond excited to take part in this unique and beautifully written TV series about a strong woman trying to find her voice against all odds.”
Unorthodox Plot: What is it about?
Inspired by Deborah Feldman’s bestselling memoir, Unorthodox tells the story of the 19-year-old Esther Shapiro, a Hasidic Jewish girl. She is married to Yanky according to her family’s wishes. However, right after marriage, Esther is under continuous pressure to become a mother. She somehow manages to become pregnant but just before announcing the news, she learns of her husband’s plans to divorce her. Therefore, she flees to Berlin and eventually, joins a music class. But her past soon catches up with her.
Yanky and Moische also reach Berlin while searching for Esther. Toward the end, Esther meets Yanky, who tries to convince her to return home with him. He gifts her a pendant and even promises to cut off his curls to prove that he is capable of change. But Esther is not convinced and after seeing a different side of the world, she wishes to explore it further. She also wants to be more independent and not live under the shadow of someone who had always deemed her unfit to survive by herself, on her own terms. Yes, it is a happy ending for a woman who had the courage to forge her own path.
