Developed by Simon Barry for Netflix, ‘Warrior Nun’ is a fast-paced teenage fantasy supernatural drama series with some impeccably crafted fight sequences, production design, costumes, and a grand premise that includes mythical and religious titbits. Based on the comic book character of Warrior Nun Areala created by Ben Dunn, the story introduces us to Ava Silva, an orphan with tetraplegia, who wakes up at a morgue, resurrected by an intimidating nun. And as she comes back to life, Ava realizes that she can walk again.
However, Ava’s new lease of life comes at a cost – she becomes part of a secret order of nuns who are ordained with the task of fighting devils. The show garnered favorable reviews upon its release, and critics were especially enthralled by the commendable performance of Alba Baptista in the central role. However, after the mind-bending finale of the first season, you must be left tallying the prospects of the follow-up season. In that case, you may rely on us.
Warrior Nun Season 2 Release Date
‘Warrior Nun’ season 1 premiered in its entirety on July 2, 2020, on Netflix. The first season comprises ten episodes with episodic runtimes ranging between 37 and 50 minutes. Let us now delve into the production details of the anticipated sophomore season.
The first season of the fantasy drama garnered overwhelming fan and critical praise. Consequently, the popular streaming platform renewed the show for a second run just over a month after its premiere. The production of the subsequent season was greenlit on August 19, 2020. Due to the dire pandemic situation and many unexpected delays, the production understandably suffered a huge blow.
However, the crew went back to film in Spain sometime in May 2021. Supervising producer David Hayter took to Twitter to share the news with the fans of the show. The tweet read, “I am currently in Spain for the next six months, producing Season Two of Warrior Nun for @netflix.” But the pre-production chores took up some more time as the cast and crew had to stay quarantined for a while upon reaching Spain. Going by an Instagram post by series co-actor Tristán Ulloa, filming finally began in the first week of July 2021.
If the production goes according to the schedule, filming will take around six months, and the final touches would require some more time. There was a gap of almost a year between the production wrap-up and the final release in the first season. Therefore, we predict ‘Warrior Nun’ season 2 to premiere sometime in late 2022.
Warrior Nun Season 2: Who can be in it?
Ostensibly, all of the main cast members will come back for the second run. Among the demon-hunting sisters, we expect to see Alba Baptista (Ava Silva), Toya Turner (Shotgun Mary), Kristina Tonteri-Young (Sister Beatrice), Lorena Andrea (Sister Lilith), and Olivia Delcan (Sister Camila). Among other prominent roles, Thekla Reuten will reprise her role of Jillian Salvius, while Tristan Ulloa will don the garb of Father Vincent once again. Sylvia De Fanti will also make a comeback as Mother Superion.
William Miller’s character Adriel is expected to play an even bigger part in the unfolding saga of the second season after the final revelation of the first season. The world of the series’ mythology is constantly unraveling, and don’t be surprised if you see some new faces in the next season.
Warrior Nun Season 2: What can it be About?
After the tedious journey that takes up a major part of the first season, Ava and Vincent finally enter the Vatican City to find the bones of the seemingly angelic Adriel. In the final two episodes of the season, the story takes an interesting turn, to say the least. Mother Superion guides Ava and others in their journey. Lilith visits Michael, who cryptically says that Ava has reached the gates. Ava and Beatrice indeed find the vault gate, and the sight of a divinium skeleton of the diabolical creature Tarask surprises them.
Shortly after, they find Adriel, who lives in the catacombs for God knows how many years. The final episode sees Ava battling with forces of good and evil, finally bringing out the truth that Adriel stole the halo from hell. Ava and Beatrice escape by an inch, and Father Vincent is revealed to be loyal to Adriel. In the final moments, Adriel summons a horde of demons, and the good nuns find themselves in a precarious situation. On the other hand, Michael enters a mysterious portal created from the energy of the fight, and we are yet to know where it leads.
The second season will seemingly pick up the story from where the first season leaves it. After the shocking finale of the inaugural season, fans are quite excited to see the second chapter in Ava’s journey through a world fraught with beguiling villains and visceral monsters. The majority of the first season is expended in providing a backbone of the story. Now that the viewers are familiar with the mythical world, the creators can make the story more energetic and packed with action. After the exposition of the season 1 finale, Adriel reveals himself to be a chief antagonistic force. In all likelihood, he will have a decisive role in unfolding the next set of events.
On the other hand, after the heated confrontation between Duretti and Mother Superion, the relationship of the ancient Order of the Cruciform Sword and the new papacy has turned hostile. Also, some questions remain unanswered at the end of the season, and the sophomore season will hopefully quench fans’ curiosity. And the central question remains in the whereabouts of Michael. Does Adriel hold him captive? This glaring question and a few more are likely to be addressed in the second season. In short, there will be more sojourns and sorcery!
