When Will Ao no Exorcist Season 3 Release on Netflix?

Night and Day. Yin and Yang. Good and Evil. If you think about it, most classic shounen anime draw clear lines between their heroes and villains. No matter how stereotypical this approach may seem, we can’t help but admire protagonists who rise from being underdogs to demon slayers (literally). ‘Blue Exorcist’ walks a viewer through a very similar quintessential “Hero’s Arc” where the son of Satan himself becomes an exorcist. As simple as that may sound, ‘Blue Exorcist’ rises above its clichés by fascinating viewers with its dark themes and memorable battle scenes. So if you have already watched the first two seasons of ‘Blue Exorcist,’ you must be wondering if it will ever be renewed for another installment. Well, here’s everything you need to know about ‘Blue Exorcist’ Season 3.

Blue Exorcist Season 3 Release Date: When Will it Premiere?

‘Blue Exorcist’ season 1 premiered on April 17, 2011, and with a total of 25 episodes, it finished airing on October 2, 2011. Despite having several familiar shounen archetypes, the anime was very well received. By November 2016, close to 15 million copies of its source material manga were in circulation. Because of its worldwide success and mostly favorable reviews, it was renewed for a whole new season, which premiered on January 17, 2019, and ended on March 25, 2017, with 12 episodes. The second season released in the US on Netflix on September 1, 2020.

When it comes to the third season, if we solely consider the anime’s popularity, it has a good chance of returning. Compared to the original manga, the second season covers up to 34 chapters (almost 9 volumes) in its span of 12 episodes. The good news is that the manga already has a total of 25 published volumes, which suggests that a whole lot of source material content is still available for not only one but many more seasons. So in a situation where the anime does get renewed for season 3, we can expect its storyline to pick up chapter 35 of volume 9.

However, since A-1 Pictures (‘Sword Art Online,’ ‘Fairy Tail‘) has made no announcements regarding its release, fans will have to wait for the news to become official. Because it took the studio almost six years to release season 2, it is possible that the creators might take a similar hiatus before they release the third installment; unless a different anime studio takes over. So if everything works out well, we can expect ‘Blue Exorcist’ Season 3 to release sometime in 2022. Any official news updates regarding its release will be updated here. Blue Exorcist English Dub

The English dub for the first two seasons of ‘Blue Exorcist’ is available on Netflix and Funimation. You can also check out its English subtitled version on Crunchyroll and Amazon Prime.

Blue Exorcist Season 3 Cast

Since A-1 Pictures animated the first two seasons of ‘Blue Exorcist,’ we can expect the studio’s return with season 3 as well. Other than that, cast members including Jun Fukuyama as Yukio, Nobuhiko Okamoto as Rin, Gou Shinomiya as Masato Chigusa, Hiroaki Hirata as Shirou, Nishimura Maya as Ao Houjou, among many others, will reprise their respective roles in the upcoming season.

Blue Exorcist Season 3 Plot: What Can it Be About?

As mentioned earlier, the story of the third season will most likely begin from the 35th chapter of the manga, which marks the inception of the “Illuminati Arc.” Somewhere around the closing moments of season 2, Rin and the crew make their way back to Kyoto. Season 2 will continue the story from here and will probably begin with another one of those quintessential shounen beach episodes. But somewhere in the backdrop of these lighthearted episodes, a new threat from the Illuminati conspiracy group will start emerging. Adding more heft to this new arc is the fact that Saburota Todou, who was defeated by Rin’s brother in season 2, was working with the same group.
