What is The Aquatope on White Sand About?

Fuuka Miyazawa is a former idol who gave up on her dreams and left Tokyo with no plans of returning. In her moment of crisis, she decides to go to Okinawa, Japan’s southernmost and westernmost prefecture, where she asks for work at the Gamagama Aquarium. There she meets Kukuru Misakino, an 18-year-old high school girl who likes to pretend to be the director of the place although she is only chasing her dream by working there, and in reality, her grandfather is the actual director. The short-tempered teenager, despite being very different from Fuuka, immediately befriends her, and the two find someone to share their fears, hopes, and dreams with.

Unfortunately, Gamagama is facing the threat of closure, and two girls decide to do something about it and soon begin to revamp the place. Meanwhile, Fuuka has a lot going on in her mind as she struggles with a lack of purpose, a sense of loneliness, and in general, other existential conflicts have sadly become a part of her everyday life. However, with Kukuru on her side, will the former idol find more meaning in her life and begin to live more freely?
