What’s Wild ‘N Out about?
‘Nick Cannon Presents: Wild ‘N Out’ is a fast-paced, hip-hop-centric improv comedy competition that showcases heated head-to-head battles at lighting speed, helmed by the master of ceremonies himself, Nick Cannon. Yes, the stakes are definitely high as skilled artists engage in the funniest face-offs, comprising a series of visceral, hip-hop-edged comedy showdowns. Everything finally culminates in an ultimate rap battle to win the coveted championship belt.
The format of ‘Wild ‘N Out’ is similar to that of other improv comedy shows such as ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?’ Here, two teams of talented comedians are pitted against each other through a number of ‘Wild ‘N Out’ games. These are, in fact, types of improvisational comedy games. The two teams were originally named “Red Squad” and the “Black Squad”.
The former team, under the captaincy of Cannon, was later renamed to “Platinum Squad”. On the other hand, the latter team was led by a celebrity guest. However, after season 7, the positions were reversed. In season 8, the colors were changed and the “Black Squad” was replaced by the “Gold Squad” – again captained by Cannon. But since season 9, Nick has been leading his original “Red Squad” and the “Black Squad” is led by a guest artist.
Each episode comprises three rounds of games. Post the third round, two teams engage in a final face-off called “Wild Style.” Here, they are required to deliver a punchline directed at their opponent member(s) within a freestyle rap. The participants also “beef” with each other, but some are just impersonal jokes. The show follows a “points don’t matter” approach. However, one point is scored by each victorious team per round during the normal rounds.
One extra point is given by the judges for their favorite punchline during the “Wild Style” stage. Additionally, every episode also includes a musical performance, occasionally performed by the guest captain for the Black or Platinum Squad. Sometimes, the musical guest is also kept as a surprise until the “Wild Style” as the judge for the “beefs”. Currently, the teams compete for a “Wild ‘N Out” Championship belt, which, if the squad wins, the captain gets to take it home.
