Director-producer Peter Winther brings another captivating tale of brooding horror in Netflix’s horror thriller ‘Aftermath.’ Loosely based on a true story, the narrative centers on young couple, Kevin and Natalie, whose marriage is seemingly in shambles after Kevin gets to know about Natalie’s extramarital affair. However, both of them are ready to move on from the past, and after getting a cheap deal on a crime scene house, they relocate to their new suburban residence.
Only then, a series of seemingly supernatural events mar their plans of reconciliation. Their world literally goes up in flames, and with them not knowing what they are dealing with, the enemy stays one step ahead. The ending brings the story to a destined close, but there are perhaps ways to expand and stretch the story for a couple of follow-ups. If you are left weighing the prospects of the sequel, you may bank on us.
Aftermath 2 Release Date
‘Aftermath’ premiered on August 4, 2021, globally on Netflix. Let us now consider the prospects of a sequel to the home invasion horror-thriller venture. The incredible cast includes the likes of Ashley Greene and Shawn Ashmore, and their chemistry has made people wonder if there will be a follow-up.
Even if the director may have an idea for a sequel, we do not know that since he did not divulge a sequel idea to the audience. The movie received moderately favorable reviews on critical platforms, which may rekindle the possibility of the sequel. Although some of the audiences and critics thought the movie to be a bit slow-paced, some, on the other hand, were enthralled by the natural dialogue, the chemistry between the cast members, and the jump-scare scenes, some of which are chilling to the core. So, it would be fair to say that the movie ultimately polarized the audience and critics.
The movie does not do enough to stand out from the crowd when it comes to home invasion horrors. Although, it contains some brilliant moments, and the overall production value is high. But is that enough to warrant a sequel? It is also difficult to deduce anything from the genre since the movie is somewhat of a genre-bending venture. If we consider horror as the movie’s overarching genre, even then, it isn’t easy to put any certainty on paper. Some horror flicks, like ‘The Conjuring’ or ‘The Ring,’ become sprawling movie franchises, while some of the great ones of the genre are a one-time exercise.
Looking at the story itself, there is still scope for further exploration. As often happens in these ventures, the story will progress with new tenants moving into the sinister house without knowing its past inhabitants and the peril that befell them. But the movie is based on a true story, and the director may steer clear of the sequel idea in his commitment to the source story. If you have seen the movie, it’s not your everyday horror with ghosts with rotating heads. Rather, it is a refreshing horror that builds on the psychological disturbance of the audience. And for one thing, we know that psychological thrillers rarely have sequels or spin-offs. Considering all the aspects, we can safely conclude that it is highly unlikely that the ‘Aftermath’ sequel will ever be made.
