‘Old’ is a thriller film that follows a group of guests at a beach resort who discover that they are aging rapidly and make futile attempts to escape. Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, one of the most divisive filmmakers of this century, the movie is laced with suspense and delivers (sort of) a twist ending, a trope that has become synonymous with Shyamalan’s work. If you watched this perplexing film adaptation of Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters’s graphic novel titled ‘Sandcastle,’ you must be craving for a follow-up to learn more about the mystical beach seen in the film. In that case, we’ve got you covered! Here’s everything we know about a sequel to ‘Old.’
Old Sequel Release Date
‘Old’ was released in theatres on July 21, 2021, in France, Belgium, and Romandy before arriving in the United States and other countries on July 23, 2021. It was distributed by Universal Pictures. The movie was earlier scheduled to release on February 26, 2021, but was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic’s effect on the film and theatre industries.
In terms of the probability of the movie receiving a follow-up, the chances seem very low. Firstly, even though the movie leaves a lot of answers to the audience’s imagination, it reveals the true nature of the beach and what is going on there. That is enough for the audience to come up with their own unique answers to some of the open-ended questions, and perhaps that is the director’s intention.
If we consider Shyamalan’s previous releases, only two of the films directed by him have received a sequel. 2000’s ‘Unbreakable‘ eventually developed into the ‘Unbreakable’ trilogy (aka ‘Eastrail 177’ trilogy) with the addition of ‘Split‘ in 2017 and ‘Glass‘ in 2019. In various interviews, during the promotion of ‘Glass,’ Shyamalan hinted that he might never make another sequel to his movies.
Similarly, the graphic novel on which the film is loosely based is a standalone story and does not have a follow-up entry. While Hollywood lives on a never say never attitude, the chances of a sequel to ‘Old’ materializing are bleak at best. However, by a stroke of luck, if a sequel does happen, it could potentially release sometime in 2023 at the earliest.
‘Old’ features an ensemble cast led by Alex Wolff, who plays Trent (15-year-old), while Emun Elliott appears as the character’s older version. Thomasin McKenzie portrays Maddox (16-year-old) while Embeth Davidtz plays the character’s older version. Eliza Scanlen plays Kara (15-year-old), and Mikaya Fisher appears as the character’s 11-year-old version.
The cast also includes the talents of Gael García Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Rufus Sewell, Abbey Lee, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Ken Leung in the roles of Guy, Prisca, Charles, Chrystal, Patricia, and Jarin respectively. For a prospective sequel, Elliott and Davidtz could return as their characters are the only survivor of the film’s events. Wolff and McKenzie could potentially return depending on the sequel’s plot. The sequel could also feature an entirely new cast.
‘Old’ ends with siblings Trent and Maddox escaping the beach and alerting the police about the drug trials being held by using the resort as a front. They also have evidence in the form of a diary that contains the names of many of the missing guests, which the siblings found on the beach. Therefore, it is safe to say that the pharmaceutical experiments will no longer be held on the spot.
A potential sequel could dive deeper into the mystic nature of the beach, with certain people intending to utilize the location’s altered flow of time for research or other nefarious purposes. The connection between the beach and the coral could be explored, and a way to slow down the speed of time could be discovered, triggering off a new batch of experiments on the beach.
