‘Happiest Season’ is a beautiful Christmas story centered around a lesbian couple, Abby and Harper. Although the latter invites her girlfriend to spend the holidays with her conservative family, she mentions that she hasn’t come out to her family, only at the last moment. Eventually, this causes a rift in their relationship, but they strive to work things out.
The lighthearted yet relevant film explores the intricacies and difficulties that members of the LGBTQ community tend to face around the festive season and how social conditioning is embedded in the very fabric of interpersonal relationships. Will this beautiful rom-com get a sequel? Here’s what we know.
Happiest Season Sequel Release Date
‘Happiest Season’ released on November 25, 2020, on Hulu, in the United States. Its international release followed a day later, on November 26, 2020, by Sony Pictures Releasing and Entertainment One.
Since the plot deals with some rather pertinent social issues through the lens of a romantic comedy, it was widely praised by critics everywhere. Hence, a sequel would make sense, wherein the makers would explore other aspects of Abby, Harper and John’s individual personalities and their interpersonal dynamics. Although there is no news of such a project yet, if it were to be greenlit, we can expect ‘Happiest Season 2’ to release sometime in 2023 or later.
Happiest Season Sequel Cast: Who can be in it?
In ‘Happiest Season,’ Kristen Stewart plays Abby, whereas Mackenzie Davis is Harper. Dan Levy brings his usual charm and pizazz to the screen as Abby’s gay friend, John. Aubrey Plaza is seen as Harper’s ex-girlfriend, Riley. We expect them to reprise their roles in the sequel. Apart from this, Harper’s family plays a huge role in the movie.
Mary Steenburgen plays the mother, Tipper, whereas Victor Garber is Ted, Harper’s dad, who is a politician. Alison Brie is Sloane, and Mary Holland is Jane. They are the protagonist’s sisters. Jake McDorman plays Connor, Harper’s ex-boyfriend. Although they are highly instrumental to the plot of ‘Happiest Season,’ it seems unlikely that all of them will make a comeback in the sequel.
Happiest Season Sequel Plot: What can it be About?
Abby and Harper love each other a lot. They even share a wonderful, Christmas fuelled moment while touring a well-decorated neighborhood. Due to this, the latter gives into the heat of the moment and invites Abby to spend Christmas with her folks. But here’s the catch – Harper’s father is a politician, and for this reason, public image matters a lot. This is also why Harper has not come out to her family.
So Abby has to play the role of “that orphaned friend” while Harper pretends to be straight in front of everyone. As the movie progresses, the two of them are unable to cope with their surroundings, and slowly but surely, their relationship starts getting affected. Verbal spats and altercations are what, surprisingly, deliver the protagonists their happy ending.
As far as the sequel is concerned, we think it would befit the narrative to focus on John’s backstory. This way, the movie would still be championing the LGBTQ cause. Plus, at one point in the film, it is mentioned that his father threw him out of the house and did not talk to him for many years. If the plot were to focus on the trials and tribulations that John then faced, it would help educate many other individuals out there. Moreover, it would be interesting to see what makes John, well… John.
