Will There be a Snake Eyes Sequel?

‘Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins’ (or simply ‘Snake Eyes’) is an action thriller film directed by Robert Schwentke (‘The Time Traveler’s Wife‘) that follows the titular hero as he trains under the purview of Japan’s Arashikage Clan and faces various tests on his path towards becoming a fearsome and revered ninja warrior. The standalone movie is based on the popular toy series ‘G.I. Joe’ and serves as a reboot of the film franchise of the same name. If you were enthralled by the movie’s stellar action and enjoyed exploring the world of ‘G.I. Joe,’ you must already be wondering about Snake Eyes’ next mission. In that case, we’ve got you covered! Here’s everything we know about a ‘Snake Eyes’ sequel.

Snake Eyes Sequel Release Date

‘Snake Eyes’ was released in theatres by Paramount Pictures on July 23, 2021. The film was earlier slated to release on March 27, 2020, but was postponed multiple times due to the Covid-19 pandemic before arriving on the aforementioned date.

Despite the movie’s mixed reviews, the film holds enough charm to warrant a sequel. In May 2020, it was reported that a sequel to ‘Snake Eyes’ is in early development, with Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse set to pen the script. However, no further updates have been provided on the project as of now, and it is possible that the producers were waiting for the movie’s release before making any official announcements regarding a sequel. Therefore, a sophomore outing for Snake Eyes seems like a matter of when and not if. A mid-credits scene is also included in the movie, which further raises the chances of the sequel materializing.

If a follow-up does receive the green light, it might not be a sequel in the most traditional sense and might dive deeper into the ‘G.I. Joe’ mythology by building upon the world set up by ‘Snake Eyes.’ Whatever form or shape the follow-up might take, it will still technically be a sequel to the solo film. Therefore, considering the two-year production timeline of the predecessor, ‘Snake Eyes 2’ (or whatever the title might be) could land on our screens sometime in 2023 at the earliest.

Snake Eyes Sequel Cast: Who can be in it?

‘Snake Eyes’ stars Henry Golding (‘Crazy Rich Asians‘) as Snake Eyes, the eponymous hero trying to find closure for his father’s death. Andrew Koji (‘Warrior‘) essays the role of Thomas “Tommy” Arashikage/Storm Shadow, Snake Eyes’ friend and blood brother. Samara Weaving (‘The Babysitter‘) plays Scarlett, an ally of Snake Eyes and G.I. Joe Agent, while Úrsula Corberó (‘Money Heist‘) portrays Baroness, a high-ranking operative of Cobra, a terrorist organization.

Iko Uwais and Peter Mensah appear in supporting roles as Hard Master and Blind Master, the co-leaders of the Arashikage Clan. Takehiro Hira appears as Kenta, an Arashikage Clan outcast. For ‘Snake Eyes 2,’ we expect most of the main cast members to reprise their roles. The sequel will almost certainly introduce more members of G.I. Joe and Cobra, and some new faces are likely to join the sequel’s cast.

Snake Eyes Sequel Plot: What can it be about?

In the climax of ‘Snake Eyes,’ Tommy leaves the Arashikage Clan and swears to kill Snake Eyes the next time their paths cross. Snake Eyes learns from Scarlett that his father was a G.I. Joe and died during an undercover mission. This opens the door for the ninja warrior to join the elite military team. In the mid-credits scene, Baroness tempts Tommy into joining the ranks of Cobra, and he fully claims the Storm Shadow moniker.

In ‘Snake Eyes 2,’ we could possibly learn more about the war between G.I. Joe and Cobra as the first film hints there is a rich history of conflicts between the two organizations. We will likely see Snake Eyes as a member of G.I. Joe taking on a Cobra-affiliated Storm Shadow in an epic confrontation between the former friends. Actor Henry Golding has hinted that Snake Eyes could turn mute (as he is often depicted) in the follow-up. Following the lead of the comics and cartoons, Snake Eyes and Scarlett could develop a romantic relationship.
